Drivers nabbed in emergency lane weekend sting

Police catch more than 200 people driving illegally in the emergency lane on the Western Ring Road following complaints from the city council and local residents.

Twenty of the drivers picked up by police were texting or talking on their mobile phones at the time.

Motorists reportedly cheered highway police as they nabbed other drivers on the ring road in Sunshine.

"Drivers were pretty happy to see us out there, cheering and showing their support as they drove past," Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Andy Oakley said.

"This operation was about road safety but seems to have resonated well with those road users who obey the road rules."

The offending drivers were issued a $311 fine for failing to obey an emergency stopping lane sign.

Along with alcohol and drug testing, Operation Arid focused on fatigue, speed, distraction and lack of seatbelts.

The annual Labour Day long weekend operation covered the entire state in an effort to reduce the number of lives lost on Victorian roads.

Drivers calling in to 3AW applauded the move and said they were tired of following road rules and waiting in Western Ring Road traffic while others broke the law.

Other locations targeted by police included Park Orchards - where drivers frequently used the bus lane - and closed lanes in the Burnley Tunnel in Richmond.
