Young boy dies after being hit by a 4WD

A community is in shock after a 13-year-old Melbourne boy dies after being struck by a 4WD on his way to school Tuesday morning.

The boy was struck by the car less than 100 metres from his home.

Neighbour Neil Craze performed CPR on the boy before paramedics arrived, but the boy had suffered massive head injuries and could not be revived.

"I don't think he was with me to be honest. I think he was gone"

Witness Michelle Nuku told Channel Ten the boy's stepfather arrived on the scene moments after the accident.

"He must have seen the skateboard and noticed it and just jumped out of the car and ran to him," Ms Nuku said.

Soon afterwards, the boy's mother arrived.

"And the last words, as she stood out my front door I just heard her say 'and a wonderful life is over'," neighbour Patricia Trencher told Channel Ten.  "This whole street is a very sad street today."

Police said the boy was skateboarding on a quiet road and was wearing a helmet.

"He did everything right, he had a helmet on, he was going to school… a tragic accident," an emotional Acting Sergeant Dale Murley told reporters at the scene.

"I'll go home tonight and the first thing I'll do is I'll give my boys a cuddle," he said.

The driver of the car, reportedly a woman who lived just a few doors away and who was driving some of her own children to school, was assisting police with their inquiries.
