The AFL has typically attempted to schedule men's games as twilight or night matches when played in the northern states in hotter periods of the year, but the timing of the women's competition in February and March has meant games have already been played during the day.
The game will be played early enough for Lions fans interested to see their team hosting the inaugural grand final who still want to travel down to the Gold Coast to watch the first men's game of the season that night.
The Lions are two games clear on top of the ladder and are certain to host the final. Ideally they would have hosted the final as a curtain-raiser to the men's team playing afterwards, but they did not want to play their home final at the ground of their Queensland rival.
The match will be completed ahead of the two men's twilight matches – St Kilda v Melbourne and the Swans v Port – which are due to begin at 4.35pm.
