Shardha Ram Phillauri

Shardha Ram Phillauri (30 September 1837 – 24 June 1881) was a Hindu missionary, social reformer, astrologer, and writer, best remembered for his contributions to Hindi and Punjabi literature. He has been called the "father of modern Punjabi prose."

Biography

Shardha Ram was born in 1837 to a Brahmin family in the town of Phillaur, Jalandhar. His father, Jai Dyalu, was an astrologer. He did not have any formal education as such. At the age of seven, he learned Gurmukhi script. By age ten, he had studied Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian, astrology, and music. Later, he was also a missionary of traditional Hinduism (Sanatana dharma).

In his books, Shardha Ram documented Punjabi culture and language.

Shardha Ram gave forceful lectures on the Mahabharata, and because of this was charged with conducting propaganda against the British government in 1865. As a result, he was exiled temporarily from his home town, Phillaur.

Sharda Ram often visited Amritsar and adjoining Lahore, especially in connection with astrology. During this time, he earned a reputation as an astrologer and wrote several books in Hindi.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma (pronounced [əˈnʊʂkaː ˈʃərmaː]; born 1 May 1988) is an Indian film actress and producer. She has established a career in Hindi cinema, and is one of the most popular actresses in India. She has received one Filmfare Award from six nominations.

Born in Ayodhya and raised in Bangalore, Sharma got her first break as a model for fashion designer Wendell Rodricks in 2007 and later moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in modelling. Following an audition at Yash Raj Films, she made her screen debut in Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), for which she received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The sleeper hit Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) marked a turning point in her career, earning her praise and several accolades.

In 2012, Sharma won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying a documentary filmmaker in the Yash Chopra romance Jab Tak Hai Jaan. She earned her biggest commercial success by playing the female lead in the fantasy drama PK (2014), the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. In 2015, she starred and co-produced the crime thriller NH10, which garnered her critical acclaim, and appeared alongside an ensemble cast in the dramedy Dil Dhadakne Do.

Diljit Dosanjh

Diljit Dosanjh is an Indian singer, actor and television presenter. Born in a small village Kishanpur Jalandhar, Punjab, India. Today he is recognized as one of the leading artists in the Punjabi music industry. He also acts in Punjabi movies, with many of them being noticeable hits, including 2012 film Jatt & Juliet, 2013 film Jatt & Juliet 2 and 2015 film Sardaar Ji – which are counted among the most successful Punjabi movies in history. His first recorded mainstream performance was his solo track and music video Ishq Da Uda Ada from his 2000 album produced by Finetone Cassettes.

Life and career

1984–2000: Early life and beginnings

Diljit Dosanjh was born in a small village near Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. His father, Balbir Singh Dosanjh, is an employee of Punjab Roadways, and his mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, is a housewife. He has two siblings, one sister and one brother. He spent his early childhood in Dosanjh Kalan and then moved to Ludhiana, Punjab from where he completed his formal education, including his high school diploma from Al manar Public School. While still in school, he began singing Sikh music at local gurdwaras.

Subscription business model

Suraj Sharma

Suraj Sharma (born 21 March 1993) is an Indian actor, who made his debut with the title role in the 2012 film Life of Pi. Directed by Ang Lee, Life of Pi was adapted from the novel of the same name. In 2014, he portrayed Aayan Ibrahim in season 4 of the Showtime series Homeland.

Life and career

Suraj Sharma was born and brought up in a Malayali family in New Delhi, India. His father, Gokul Churai, is a software engineer from Thalassery, Kerala and his mother, Shailaja, is an economist from Palakkad, Kerala. He attended Sardar Patel Vidyalaya school. He has a younger brother, Sriharsh Sharma, who has also acted in two films, and a younger sister, Dhruvatara Sharma. With no prior acting experiences, he auditioned along with his brother for the role of Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel in Life of Pi (2012). Sharma went through several rounds of auditions before winning the title role. Director Ang Lee has stated that he selected Sharma primarily based on his expressive eyes and innocent appearance. According to him, Sharma had not only the emotion, but also the "look" of Pi. His "medium complexion" and "average build" were deemed perfect for the role. The film was met with critical acclaim, winning four Academy Awards; Sharma's performance received positive reviews, and he was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
