Falklands Crisis was a 1982 war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The conflict resulted from the long-standing dispute over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which lie in the South Atlantic, east of Argentina.

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located 300 miles from the coast of Argentina. They consist of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, together with 776 smaller islands. Stanley, on East Falkland, is the capital. The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.
Stanley (formerly known as "Port Stanley") is the capital and only true city in the Falkland Islands. It is located on the isle of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope, south of Stanley Harbour, in one of the wettest parts of the islands. As of the 2006 census, the city had a population of 2,115.
The video begins aboard the Star Princess as we sail into Stanley Harbor in the Falkland Islands. Next there is a tour of the town of Stanley complete with comments from our colorful local guide. Next is a visit to the penguin colony at Gypsy Cove. The video then concludes with our sail away from the Falkland Islands aboard the Star Princess.

There is no doubt it was an incredible mission during the Falklands War. The RAF launched a Vulcan bomber 8,000-miles to put the runway at Port Stanley out of action.
A logistical nightmare, the Cold War-era Vulcan needed 13 fuel tankers to reach its target and return to the Ascension Islands. The 16-hour flight on April 30 and May 1, 1982, was the longest non-stop bombing mission in history.
The result was that one of its load of 1,000lb bombs hit the runway, denying the Argentines the the chance to use it for their fast jets – a key, early victory in the battle for air supremacy.

STORYLINE:
Falkland Islanders reacted on Monday to the death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Government official Mike Summers said it was a "very sad day" for residents.
As Prime Minister, Thatcher ordered British troops to regain the South Atlantic Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, following an invasion by Argentina on 2 April 1982.
The 74-day war left 649 Argentine soldiers dead, along with 255 British military personnel and three Falkland Islanders.
"Mrs Thatcher is obviously very well remembered and well loved for being the person who led the liberation of the Falklands in 1982," said Summers.
"There were probably few people around in political life who could have done what she put together. And she will ever be remembered for that."
The cluster of islands 8-thousand miles (12,800 kilometres) from Britain was home to 1,800 people in 1982 when Argentina attempted to take back the Islands which had been under British rule for 150 years.
Thatcher dispatched a British task force of 28-thousand troops and more than 100 vessels which fought against 12-thousand soldiers and 40 ships from Argentina on land and sea.
Business owner Sybie Summers added that Thatcher will always be remembered as the "Iron Lady."
"If wasn't for her, we probably, I probably wouldn't be here today," she said.

Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands (/ˈfɔːlklənd/; Spanish: Islas Malvinas [malˈβinas]) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 miles (480 km) east of South America's southern Patagonian coast, at a latitude of about 52°S. The archipelago, with an area of 4,700 square miles (12,000 km2), comprises East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. As a British overseas territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, and the United Kingdom takes responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The islands' capital is Stanley on East Falkland.
Controversy exists over the Falklands' discovery and subsequent colonisation by Europeans. At various times, the islands have had French, British, Spanish, and Argentine settlements. Britain reasserted its rule in 1833, although Argentina maintains its claim to the islands. In April 1982, Argentine forces temporarily occupied the islands. British administration was restored two months later at the end of the Falklands War.

Falklands War
The Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas), also known as the Falklands Conflict, Falklands Crisis, and the Guerra del Atlántico Sur (Spanish for "South Atlantic War"), was a ten-week war between Argentina and the United Kingdom over two British overseas territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It began on Friday, 2 April 1982, when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands (and, the following day, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands) in an attempt to establish the sovereignty it had claimed over them. On 5 April, the British government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982, returning the islands to British control. In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities.

Atlantic Ocean
The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's oceanic divisions, following the Pacific Ocean. With a total area of about 106,400,000 square kilometres (41,100,000 sq mi), it covers approximately 20 percent of the Earth's surface and about 29 percent of its water surface area. The first part of its name refers to Atlas of Greek mythology, making the Atlantic the "Sea of Atlas".
The oldest known mention of "Atlantic" is in The Histories of Herodotus around 450 BC (Hdt. 1.202.4): Atlantis thalassa (Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς θάλασσα; English: Sea of Atlas). The term Ethiopic Ocean, derived from Ethiopia, was applied to the southern Atlantic as late as the mid-19th century. Before Europeans discovered other oceans, their term "ocean" was synonymous with the waters beyond the Strait of Gibraltar that are now known as the Atlantic. The early Greeks believed this ocean to be a gigantic river encircling the world.
The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Eurasia and Africa to the east, and the Americas to the west. As one component of the interconnected global ocean, it is connected in the north to the Arctic Ocean, to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, and the Southern Ocean in the south (other definitions describe the Atlantic as extending southward to Antarctica). The equator subdivides it into the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean.

A logistical nightmare, the Cold War-era Vulcan needed 13 fuel tankers to reach its target and return to the Ascension Islands. The 16-hour flight on April 30 and May 1, 1982, was the longest non-stop bombing mission in history. Falkland Islanders reacted on Monday to the death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Government official Mike Summers said it was a "very sad day" for residents.
As Prime Minister, Thatcher ordered British troops to regain the South Atlantic Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, following an invasion by Argentina on 2 April 1982.
The 74-day war left 649 Argentine soldiers dead, along with 255 British military personnel and three Falkland Islanders.
"Mrs Thatcher is obviously very well remembered and well loved for being the person who led the liberation of the Falklands in 1982," said Summers.
"There were probably few people around in political life who could have done what she put together. And she will ever be remembered for that."
The cluster of islands 8-thousand miles (12,800 kilometres) from Britain was home to 1,800 people in 1982 when Argentina attempted to take back the Islands which had been under British rule for 150 years.
Thatcher dispatched a British task force of 28-thousand troops and more than 100 vessels which fought against 12-thousand soldiers and 40 ships from Argentina on land and sea.
Business owner Sybie Summers added that Thatcher will always be remembered as the "Iron Lady."
"If wasn't for her, we probably, I probably wouldn't be here today," she said.
