Each month the Current Employment Statistics program surveys about 147,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 634,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions.

Jobless rates were lower in December than a year earlier in 236 of the 387 metropolitan areas, higher in 111, and unchanged in 40. Nonfarm payroll employment was up in 292 metropolitan areas over the year, down in 87, and unchanged in 8.

January jobless rates down in 5 states; payroll jobs up in 13 states, down in 1

In January, unemployment rates were significantly lower in 5 states and stable in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 13 states, decreased in Alaska, and was essentially unchanged in 36 states and the District.
