Perth's late summer weather set to come to an end

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed Perth's extended summer is set to come to an end, with severe thunderstorms and cool temperatures predicted in the coming week.

Lightning struck at several places around the state, with trees going up in flames in Noranda and Wanneroo. East Cannington resident Bill captured incredible footage of a bird narrowly missed by a lightning bolt hitting the power pole it was sitting on.

Perth's summer took a while to kick off in 2017, with record levels of rainfall and state-wide flooding- but the beginning of March offered a blissful relief with its warmer temperature.

But Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster James Crow said next week's forecast is just the beginning.

"Once we get the first cold front of the year come through, it usually signifies we are moving into an autumn, or even winter, pattern," he said.

"Our first one for the year is coming on Tuesday evening... it will bring up a whole bunch of cold air from the southern parts of the ocean, and will roll out over the South West."

Temperatures look set to hover around the mid-twenties for much of next week, with showers predicted for both Sunday and Monday.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for those living in parts of the Midwest Gascoyne, Goldfields Midlands and the Perth Metropolitan.

"This includes people in Moora, Mount Magnet, Dalwallinu, Dowerin, Morawa, Paynes Find, Toodyay, Wongan Hills, Yalgo, northern and eastern parts of the Perth Metropolitan area and surrounding areas," an alert said.

"This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous."
