Saeb Muhammad Salih Erekat (also Erikat or Erakat or Arekat; Arabic: صائب عريقات Ṣāʼib ʻUrayqāt or ʻRēqāt; born 28 April 1955) was the Palestinian chief of the PLO Steering and Monitoring Committee until 12 February 2011. He negotiated the Oslo Accords with Israel and remained chief negotiator from 1995 until May 2003, when he resigned in protest from the Palestinian government. He later reconciled with the party and was reappointed to the post in September 2003.
Saeb Erekat was born on 28 April 1955 in Jericho or Abu Dis, then under Jordanian occupation. Erekat is one of seven children, with his brothers and sisters living outside of Israel or the Palestinian territories. Erekat received a BA and MA in political science at San Francisco State University in the United States, and completed his Ph.D. in peace and conflict studies at Bradford University in England. He is married and is father of twin daughters and two sons.
On 8 May 2012, he was hospitalized in Ramallah after suffering a heart attack.

An old Yiddish proverb has it that a bad peace is better than a good war, which is hard to argue with unless it serves as an excuse for the absence of a good peace. After decades of fruitless talks, is a solution still attainable in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Saeb Erekat, the Secretary-General of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saeb_Erekat Stephen Sackur speaks to veteran Palestinian negotiator and secretary general of the PLO Saeb Erekat. Why are so many mostly young Palestinians intent on killing Israeli Jews with whatever weapons they can lay their hands on? The Israeli government blames the surge in violence on hate-fuelled incitement sanctioned by the Palestinian authorities. The Palestinians say it is a response to the intolerable conditions of occupation. Is a new wave of extremism sweeping the West Bank and Gaza?
The deadline of the latest round of US-sponsored Israeli-Palestinian peace talks is looming. But can it produce an agreement after decades of failure? For more than 20 years, from the Madrid talks in 1991 up to recent times, Dr Saeb Erekat has been negotiating peace with the Israelis - without success. In this episode, Mehdi Hasan goes head to head with Dr Erekat on the shortcomings of the Palestinian strategy, and whether his government's alleged corruption and human rights abuses have played a part. Saeb Erekat's speech at J Street's 2015 National Conference.
More than 50 Palestinians and eight Israelis have been killed in renewed violence in Israel and Palestine. The latest unrest was triggered by Israel's increased restrictions on Palestinian access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and visits to the site by Jewish groups last month. Since then, stabbings, shootings and clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces have erupted throughout the occupied territories, including the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza. Palestinians are continuing to protest restrictions on movement, attacks by settlers and failed peace negotiations. As violence continues to escalate, is the Palestinian Authority failing its people? And will a 'third intifada' help the Palestinian cause?

(16 Feb 2017) Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat on Thursday warned that a single state under which there would be different systems of rule imposed on Israelis and Palestinians will be a form of apartheid and unsustainable. Erekat said a one state solution would have to mean equal democratic rights for all people. It follows US President Donald Trump's suggestion that a two-state solution to the conflict with Israel is optional. Trump, with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by his side at the White House on Wednesday, withheld clear support for an independent Palestinian country and declared that he could support a one-state solution that produces peace. The Palestinians seek a state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, areas captured by Israel in th...

Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat asserts in an interview on Israel Television Channel 2 on 13.2.2011 that the Palestinians responded to then PM Olmert's offer with a counter offer. Why doesn't Olmert mention this? Is it because the Palestinian proposal was so far beyond anything acceptable in Israel that revealing the details would show the Olmert;s claim that a deal could indeed be cut is a fantasy and that the only thing Olmert's own generous offer achieved was to erode Israel's red lines in Palestinian and American eyes.

Thanks to THE PALESTINE PAPERS, a kind of Arab WikiLeaks, the role of VIP, Prima Donna, often called 'collaborator' and 'traitor', Saeb Erekat, has now been much more publicly exposed. On 4 November 2010 Mark Bruzonsky had a chance to question Erekat up close. He reminded Erekat that 19 years ago they were sitting alone together in Jerusalem when Erekat got Arafat's call that he was going to the Madrid Conference on the Palestinian negotiating team. Now, all these years later, Bruzonsky asks Erekat directly if he is going to heed the growing calls for his resignation after so many years of terrible failure. Watch & Listen...
This is an interview by Jerry Gordon, a Senior Editor of the New English Review with Dr. Daniel Mandel, director of the Zionists of America (ZoA) Center for Middle East Policy on the renewal of Israeli Palestinian peace discussions announced by US Secretary of State John Kerry initially held in Washington, DC on July 29th and 30th, 2013 at the State Department and with President Obama. The goal has been set by Secretary Kerry of completing discussions leading to a possible final status agreement on all core issues within nine months of launch. Kerry has appointed former US Ambassador Martin Indyk to monitor these discussions with senior Israeli representative Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian Authority chief negotiator Saeb Erekat. The cabinet of Israeli Prime Minister approved ...
