The Göta Canal (Swedish: Göta kanal) is a Swedish canal constructed in the early 19th century. It formed the backbone of a waterway stretching some 614 km (382 mi), linking a number of lakes and rivers to provide a route from Gothenburg on the west coast to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea via the river Göta älv and the Trollhätte kanal, through the large lakes Vänern and Vättern.
The canal itself is 190 km (120 mi) long, of which 87 km (54 mi) were dug or blasted, with a width varying between 7–14 m (23–46 ft) and a maximum depth of about 3 m (9.8 ft). It has 58 locks and can accommodate vessels up to 32 m (105 ft) long, 7 m (23 ft) wide and 2.8 m (9.2 ft) in draft. Göta Canal is a sister canal of Caledonian Canal in Scotland, which was also constructed by Thomas Telford.
The idea of a canal across southern Sweden was first put forward as early as 1516, by Hans Brask, the bishop of Linköping. However, it was not until the start of the 19th century that Brask's proposals were put into action by Baltzar von Platen, a German-born former officer in the Swedish Navy. He organised the project and obtained the necessary financial and political backing. His plans attracted the enthusiastic backing of the government and the new king, Charles XIII, who saw the canal as a way of kick-starting the modernisation of Sweden. Von Platen himself extolled the modernising virtues of the canal in 1806, claiming that mining, agriculture and other industries would benefit from "a navigation way through the country."
Canals and navigations are human-made channels for water. In the vernacular both are referred to as 'canals'. The main difference between them is that a navigation parallels a river and shares its drainage basin, while a canal cuts across a drainage divide.
A navigation is a series of channels that run roughly parallel to the valley and stream bed of an unimproved river. A navigation always shares the drainage basin of the river. A vessel uses the calm parts of the river itself as well as improvements, traversing the same changes in height.
A true canal is a channel that cuts across a drainage divide, making a navigable channel connecting two different drainage basins.
Most commercially important canals of the first half of the 19th-century were a little of each, using rivers in long stretches, and divide crossing canals in others. This is true for many canals still in use.
Both navigations and canals use engineered structures to improve navigation:

Sweden (i/ˈswiːdən/ SWEE-dən; Swedish: Sverige [ˈsvæːrjə] listen ), officially the Kingdom of Sweden (Swedish: Konungariket Sverige ), is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. It borders Norway to the west and Finland to the east, and is connected to Denmark in the southwest by a bridge-tunnel across the Öresund. At 450,295 square kilometres (173,860 sq mi), Sweden is the third-largest country in the European Union by area, with a total population of over 9.8 million. Sweden consequently has a low population density of 21 inhabitants per square kilometre (54/sq mi), with the highest concentration in the southern half of the country. Approximately 85% of the population lives in urban areas. Southern Sweden is predominantly agricultural, while the north is heavily forested. Sweden is part of the geographical area of Fennoscandia.
Germanic peoples have inhabited Sweden since prehistoric times, emerging into history as the Geats/Götar and Swedes/Svear and constituting the sea peoples known as the Norsemen. Sweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, it expanded its territories to form the Swedish Empire, which became one of the great powers of Europe until the early 18th century. Swedish territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were gradually lost during the 18th and 19th centuries, beginning with the annexation of present-day Finland by Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Norway was militarily forced into personal union.

Travel video about destination Göta Kanal in Sweden. The Göta Canal is Sweden's construction of the millennium and connects Kattegatt on the west coast with the east coast of the Baltic Sea, and is the main waterway through Sweden, from Gothenburg to Stockholm. Gothenburg is a seaport that was founded in 1621 and on Packhus Quay, close to both the Maritime Centre and the Opera, the Wilhelm Tham on which we shall travel across Sweden, awaits us. Shortly before Trollhättan our first adventure begins as the boat ascends within a masterpiece of canal design. Over a short distance, six lock systems built in a row overcome a height difference of forty four metres. One lock after the other opens up, and the inflow of water raises the boat to the next level. Our journey leads into the Bottensjön...
Modern time wonder Gota Kanal in Sweden. Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest seaport and is located on the west coast and is the country’s military and economic "Gateway To The World" whose rapid prosperity came when the city’s merchants created their own "East India Company" in true Dutch style. We are going on a journey on the Göta Canal that travels from Gothenburg to Stockholm and is Sweden’s construction of the millennium, connecting the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. After crossing Lake Vättern we reach Borenshult, an important section of the canal with five lock chambers and a height of almost sixteen metres to overcome. This lock brings the history of the Göta Canal back to life, deep down below Lake Boren, and the joining together of the great lakes, Vänern and Vättern. We arri...
The Göta Canal will provide you with many memorable experiences, and lockage will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable. Here you find hints and advice from the Göta Canal Company for lockage on the Göta Canal.
Two weeks passed quickly in Sweden when we were sailing with Suwena the whole 190 kilometres long Göta canal from east to west. At the highest we were 91 meters above the sea level. We really got to know locks and the lockage during 58 locks on the way to lake Vänern. The Göta canal was a great adventure which is worthwhile experience for everyone, even only though thinking back to the summer of 2012 with Suwena. See more at http://www.suwena.net/en Pari viikkoa vilahti nopeasti Ruotsissa, kun seilasimme Suwenalla 190 kilometriä pitkän Göta kanavan idästä länteen.
This is a gathering of clips and images from our 2012 trip through the Trollhatten - Gothenburg Kanal Trip. We set out from our home town, Stavanger, and made our way to Kristiansand on the South of Norway, and directly crossed through the North Sea to Gothenburg. The trip took roughly a month, and we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed ourselves during it. The reason I have edited all these clips from 2012 now, is to use it as an introduction to our 2014 summers big trip, starting from Stavanger, ending in Turkey, where the boat will be moored from now on. The trip will take us through canals in Europe, as well as coasts of the Mediterranean sea. A detailed trip plan is at the end of these video. Based on the views and subscriptions we will record and upload this trip simul...

Bike trip along the Göta Canal in Sweden heading for Sjötorp on 9 July 2014 with a view to the greatest European lake The Vänern. At min. 1.30 I almost was bitten by an insect during my ride, so I had to stop in the middle of my recording and vipe the beast away, and at the end of the video I say some rubbish about the Vättern. What you see is of course the lake Vänern at Sjötorp from where you can sail to Vänersborg/Trollhättan and the Göta älv :)
The Göta Canal is one of the most remarkable waterways in the world and one of the communication links between Sweden's two largest cities. The canal itself is 190 km long, most of it dug out by hand. Between 1810 and 1832 some 58 000 soldiers removed 300 000 cubic metres of rock and earth in order to create the three-metre deep and app. 14-metre wide canal. The construction foreman and certainly the one who promoted the project most strongly was Baltzar von Platen.

Travel video about destination Sverige. In the heart of Scandinavia, Sweden is Europe’s fifth largest country. Vast and remote in the harsh north, with idyllic lakes and spectacular islands in the south. Our journey begins in Kiruna, a hundred and twenty kilometres north of the Arctic Circle where it is winter for two hundred and ten days a year. Several centuries ago, huge mineral deposits were discovered in this region but it was only from 1899, following the completion of the railroad, that mining became profitable and thousands of workers streamed into the area. Seventeen kilometres east of Kiruna in a Sami settlement in JukkasjärvI, each year the most unique hotel in the world is totally re-built, the Ice Hotel, a unique project that began in 1989. Crystal clear blocks of ice are c...
