Requests for page protection

This page is for requesting that a page, file or template be fully protected, create protected (salted), extended confirmed protected, semi-protected, added to pending changes, move-protected, template protected (template-specific), upload protected (file-specific), or unprotected. Please read up on the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates, semi-protection and pending changes are usually used only to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection), and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars.

After a page has been protected, the protection is listed in the page history and logs with a short description indicating why it was protected, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. Further discussion should take place on the Talk page of the article. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins do not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Instructions

If you would like to request to have a page protected, have a page's existing protection level lowered or raised, or would like to submit an edit request for a protected page, please follow these steps (note: if you enable the Twinkle gadget for your Wikipedia account, this process can be largely automated for you):

  1. If you are requesting unprotection, the correct protocol is to ask the protecting administrator first for unprotection (the admin's user account name can be found in the page's edit history). If for any reason he or she is unresponsive, unwilling, or unable to lower protection then you may list your request on this page.
  2. Add a level 3 header (i.e. === Example title ===) with the exact title of the page you would like (un)protected. If the page is not in the article namespace, include the namespace prefix (e.g. Template:Example template or User:Example user). Place your request at the bottom of either the protection or unprotection list, depending on the nature of your request, and place the pagelinks template below the header in the form of * Example title. Please make sure you have spelled the name of the article properly; a common error stems from mistaken requests for the protection of redirects, particularly capitalised ones (Twinkle can make sure this never happens to you!).
  3. If you are requesting protection, write the type of request (full protection, semi-protection, pending changes, move protection) and a brief reason for your request below your header.
  4. Please do not add arbitrary requests for a protection expiry time to your request, or request indefinite protection arbitrarily.
    • If there is a reason for a page to be protected for a certain amount of time, such as protecting a user talk page until the user is unblocked, please make this clear.
    • If you are requesting indefinite semi-protection or pending changes, be aware that it is only applied to articles with endemic and endless vandalism problems which multiple increasing periods of temporary semi-protection or pending changes have failed to stop.
    • Note that different expiry times can be set for edit- and for move-protections— thus, an article can, for example, be semi-edit-protected for a week and also fully-move-protected indefinitely.
  5. Sign your request with four tildes ~~~~ and click Save page.
  • Note: editors should not consider requesting page protection as a method for continuing an argument from elsewhere nor as a venue for starting a new discussion regarding article content. If a request contains excessive argument, appears to be intended to resolve a content dispute, includes personal attacks or uncivil comments, or has any other unrelated discussion, it will be removed from this page and no action will be taken.
Examples
For single page requests
Example Article Name
* Example Article Name
Semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. ~~~~
Template:Example Template Name
* Template:Example Template Name
Reduction in protection level: From full protection to template editor protection. ~~~~
For multiple page requests with the same criteria
Short descriptive header
* Wikipedia:Example Page Name 1
* Wikipedia:Example Page Name 2
Temporary semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. ~~~~

Current requests for increase in protection level[edit]

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the rolling archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Demographics of atheism[edit]

Extended confirmed protection: My first time requesting protection, but I think this is the right level protection to request at this point, unless there is another one available. There seems to be a new editor User:CindyRoleder (already has 100 edits) who does not add edit summaries to any of their edits and does not use the Talk page to discuss major edits. I and another editor have left a message for her on her Talk Page to use edit summaries, in general, and article talk pages to discuss edits since she is new, but this has not worked. On the article specifically, me and another editor have already reverted her a few times due to lack of explaining and discussing edits. I even created a discussion on the article's talk page and pinged her to get her attention on where to discuss edits. The changes on the article are becoming daily now for 5 days already, and I tried to comprise a little despite the short comings. Help! Extended confirmed protected for a period of 4 days, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 09:46, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Chris_Riddell_(futurist)[edit]

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – persistent vandalism on a living person (now happened three times in last few weeks) Including by VPN proxy anon IP address. Skittymitty (talk) 11:34, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

@Skittymitty: Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. Please read the protection policy; also, as you tend to edit only certain pages, please declare any conflict of interest you might have. Regards. Lectonar (talk) 11:40, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

2017–18 UEFA Europa League[edit]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism. Qed237 (talk) 14:49, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

DeclinedWarn the user appropriately then report them to AIV or ANI if they continue. Just one IP in the last days; apart from that not even heavily edited. Lectonar (talk) 14:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Warsaw[edit]

Change to permanent semi-protection To avoid the previously harsh, infinite and inevitable vandalism by many unregistered users I ask for the article to be permanently semi-protected. The article has been come a target of severe vandalism and some very offensive words were used against users, especially myself. If the vandalism stops occurring then the protection level can be reduced over time. Oliszydlowski 15:10, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Declined Oliszydlowski, there's no good reason to change the current one month semi to a permanent. NeilN talk to me 15:24, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Sebastian Gorka[edit]

Permanent semi-protection: due to Persistent vandalism. I have never made this request, so apologies if I am not doing this correctly, but this article is getting frequent IP edits that are vandalism and biography of living person issues. It would be better if editing was handled by registered users. It had protection earlier, and as soon as it expired, there were issues again. MeropeRiddle (talk) 15:18, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Semi-protected for a period of 2 weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. NeilN talk to me 15:22, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

File:PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen).jpg[edit]

Indefinite full protection: Persistent vandalism. Lordtobi () 16:07, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Or just block Carrickwong122 and be done with it. TimothyJosephWood 16:11, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Declined Indef blocked the vandalism-only account. — Maile (talk) 16:26, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Current requests for reduction in protection level[edit]

Please post requests in this section for removing or reducing the protection level of a page if the protecting admin is inactive or you have already asked them.
  • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
  • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
  • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
  • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add Edit fully-protected to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check here if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Template:Free media[edit]

Indefinite template protection: High-risk template – With slightly less than 300,000 transclusions, this does not merit full protection let alone cascading one. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 20:01, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Question: Have you already asksed CBM? CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 09:51, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
No, I forgot about them. Sorry! Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:23, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Template:En dash[edit]

Indefinite template protection: High-risk template – This metatemplate is not so widely used - or in the interface - as to merit full protection much less cascading one. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 20:26, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Question: Have you asked Arbitrarily0? CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 09:53, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
No, I forgot about them. Sorry! Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:23, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Template:Cite AV media[edit]

Indefinite template protection: High-risk template – This appears to be one of the lesser used citation templates. Not convinced it needs full protection, much less cascading. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 09:50, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Question: Have you asked Fuhghettaboutit? CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 09:54, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
See response below as to #Template:Category other. This one has over 19,000 transclusions.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:38, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Template:DYKmake/DYKmakecredit[edit]

Unprotection: Originally protected by @Callanecc:, but none of the two parent templates (Template:DYKmake and Template:DYKmake/DYKmake-insert) are protected or show any indication that they need one. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 10:03, 9 April 2017 (UTC).

Note: Have you asked Callanecc CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 09:58, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Note: The protection log on the template you linked in the section heading shows it was protected by Shubinator. I would be happier if all DYK templates were protected. The reason being, is that we've seen within the last year good-faith changes to DYK templates by non-admins have messed up the cascading process. Also, it's probably not best for the process to bypass DYK discussion and ask here to change one of its templates.— Maile (talk) 12:27, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Template:Category other[edit]

Indefinite template protection: High-risk template – Not nearly widely used enough to merit full protection let alone cascading one. As an aside, Template:Category redirect is also template protected. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:22, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Question: Have you asked Fuhghettaboutit. You are required to ask the protecting admin first. Then if no reply post here. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 10:00, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
This template has 127,207 transclusions, so that's the number of pages that would be affected by a single act of vandalism. What do you consider widely used? Has there ever been a discussion of a threshold for number of transclusions to define a template as high risk? It seems to me anything more than a few thousand would meet that threshold, and over 100,000 is far beyond some arbitration cutoff we might devise. By the way, I am not actually the protecting admin; I had attempted to lower the protection level to allow template editor flagged edits, and realized what I did was useless and confusing because it was cascading protected, so reinstated (but the original protecting admin is inactive). As per that, I would support lowering to allow template editors to edit.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:34, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
We have Wikipedia_talk:Protection_policy/Archive_2#Template_protection, which talks about templates with less than 10.000 transclusions (mind that this was in 2005, though). As template-editors are the savvy ones regarding templates (and there are only about 150 of them), I too would support lowering to template-editor protected. Lectonar (talk) 14:04, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Personally, I draw a sort of dividing line between full and template prot at about 1 million transclusions. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:22, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Current requests for edits to a protected page[edit]

Further information: Wikipedia:Edit requests

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

  • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among Edit protected, Edit template-protected, Edit extended-protected, or Edit semi-protected to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
  • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the request edit template should be used.
  • Page move requests should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
  • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
  • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be locked. Please make requests as long as you have a specific edit you wish to make.

Handled requests[edit]

A rolling archive of the last seven days of protection requests can be found at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Rolling archive.
