In the night between April 18th and April 19th a boat filled with up to 950 migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea, 70 miles north of Libya, while trying to reach the southern European border. On Wednesday morning, the French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo was attacked by three masked gunmen, armed with kalashnikovs, who stormed the building and killed ten of its staff and two police officers. Many journalists at the offices of Charlie Hebdo have been murdered by bampots brandishing what appear to be machine guns at close range. It is too soon to have a complete, coherent political narrative of these killings. All one can have at this point are the correct but platitudinous points about there being no justification for this, that all attacks on journalists are abhorrent, that freedom of speech must be defended to the last drop of blood, and so on. Θα αγωνιστούμε μαζί και για πλήρη πρόσβαση όλων των παιδιών στα δημόσια σχολεία, μαζί με όλα τα παιδιά, με μόνιμους δασκάλους και όση βοήθεια χρειαστεί για την εκμάθηση της γλώσσας και την αντιμετώπιση των ιδιαίτερων αναγκών τους. Για ανθρώπινες συνθήκες διαβίωσης όσο καιρό επιλέγουν ή είναι αναγκασμένοι να μείνουν εδώ. Με κορύφωση την αντιφασιστική-αντιρατσιστική πορεία που είχε καλεστεί από τον Αντιφασιστικό Συντονισμό Λέσβου στις 30 Σεπτεμβρίου και συγκέντρωσε πάνω από 350 άτομα. Οι δράσεις συνεχίζουν να λαμβάνουν μέρος υπενθυμίζοντας ότι υπάρχει πλήθος κόσμου που, μέσα από αδιαμεσολάβητους, αντιθεσμικούς και αυτοοργανωμένους αγώνες, θα συνεχίζει να αποτελεί ένα ανυπέρβλητο εμπόδιο απέναντι στην εγκαθίδρυση της κοινωνίας του ρατσισμού, της εκμετάλλευσης και της κρατικής και καπιταλιστικής βαρβαρότητας. Την Τρίτη 13 του μηνός (Σεπτεμβρίου) έγινε γνωστή η ανακοίνωση του συλλόγου γονέων και κηδεμόνων σχολείου του Ωραιοκάστρου, η οποία απειλούσε με κλείσιμο του εν λόγω σχολείου σε περίπτωση εγγραφής ως μαθητών ή χρήσης του κτηρίου από παιδιά μεταναστών. Αυτή η απόφαση έπεται του δημοτικού συμβολίου Ωραιοκάστρου και βρίσκει θερμούς συμμάχους και υποστηρικτές τόσο το δήμαρχο όσο και λοιπούς ακροατές και συμβούλους που εν χορώ διαλαλούν τα ρατσιστικά και ακροδεξιά παραληρήματα τους. A year ago, starting 20 October 2015, around 75 small shops were looted, some burned down, in the eastern townships and downtown area of the small Eastern Cape university town of Grahamstown/ iRhini, South Africa. The attacks targeted Asian and African immigrants, many of them Muslim, and displaced 500 people. These riots were largely ignored by the media.

Once it became clear that Trump was going to become the president of the USA, my Facebook feed became cluttered with attempts to understand how that could possibly happen. How could a white supremacist, misogynist and utterly transparent snake oil salesman accumulate so many votes? Those on the left both inside and outside the borders of the USA struggled to understand what had happened. [Listen to the audio of this entire article] A common conclusion in too many of these pieces is that the left needs to reach out, and listen to the concerns of, those who voted for him as a priority. In a similar fashion to how sections of the left evaluated Brexit, they see a working class anti-establishment rebellion in the Trump vote from what they term the ‘white working class’. They believe that component was won by Trump because it has been neglected by the left - often, they will assert, because the rest of the left was distracted by what they call identity politics. This is a simple explanatory story that is particularly attractive to those sections of the left that have a nostalgic yearning for an imagined past of pure class struggle, shorn of internal concerns around oppression. But the concept of masses of otherwise progressive working class voters opting for Trump on economic grounds is a myth. The attractiveness of that myth and its promotion has more to do with the hostility of that section of the left towards the influence of intersectional feminism than anything more substantive. That hostility has caused them to seek out anecdotes and exceptional regions and present them as the typical story that defines the election just as liberal Hillary Clinton campaigners have focused in on Facebook false news stories as the cause of her defeat.
