The beauty trends from New York Fashion Week that you can actually try at home

It's hard to believe it's fashion month again, but here we are. And the first cab off the rank is New York Fashion Week. The beauty looks on the runway includr striped graphic eye looks, ponytails in all sorts of guises, the new pixie cut, rainbow hair, luminous skin (of course) and dramatic headbands. Take your pick.

Hair-raising trends
Let's face it, long hair will always be in style, but it was refreshing to see a slew of new lengths both on the runway and courtside. Some of our favourites: shoulder-length bobs (or lobs) worn by Kylie and Kendall Jenner; and the hot new pixie cuts at Proenza Schouler (counterbalanced by a touch of white eyeliner at the corner of the eye) and at Creatures of the Wild the pixie cuts were highlighted by a beautifully overdrawn brow.

Note to self: Consult your hair stylist before taking a plunge this dramatic. You may want to work up to it gradually.

Eyes front

Makeup artist Diane Kendal was behind the exquisite eyeliner detail in shades of royal blue, green and red at Prabal Gurung. The look was anchored by a slick ponytail. For a more classical treatment, the looks created by Pat McGrath at Victoria Beckham were on-point, with a hint of the 'new neutral,' i.e. grey eyeshadow, on the inner corners of the lids that expanded out to edge of the brows. Look out for this lush shadow in a new collection that Beckham is creating with Estée Lauder. Our third highlight was the subtler metallic focus at Calvin Klein, with a hint silver highlighter on the inner corners of the eyes.

Note to self: for an instant at-home version try a pop of colourful eyeliner smudged out under the base of your lashes. One of our favourite flattering hues is lavender.

The must-have hair accessory

Hard-to-miss Victorian headbands at Altuzarra reigned with versions in red suede, black leather and mink, highlighted with pearls. This accessory was inspired by Vermeer's painting, Girl With a Pearl Earring, and was the perfect accompaniment to a simple ponytail. This hair was created by hairstylist Odile Gilbert who pulled the hair back into a low ponytail while Tom Pecheux's makeup was built around pale pink shades. Nails were a highlight in an eye-catching blood red hue.

Note to self: to keep a ponytail looking sleek keep a mini-can of hairspray close at hand.

Loud lips

At Rosie Assoulin, makeup artist James Kaliardos went for pay dirt with a "matte, loud, persistent mouth" in a deep shade of M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour that he then smudged out with a cotton bud. This softens the look a little. Kaliardos also layered up the colours, starting with the shade Carnivorous on the centre of the lips and then adding Dance with Me.

Note to self: prep and prime lips first to get the best base you can for this intensity of red.
