Former NBA basketball player Amar'e Stoudemire causes stir with homophobic response to question

Former NBA basketball player Amar'e Stoudemire has caused a stir with his response to a hypothetical question about having a gay teammate.

Stoudemire, now playing in Israel, told Walla Sport: "I'm going to shower across the street. I'm going to make sure my change of clothes are around the corner, and I'm going to take a different route to the gym."

Asked if he was joking, he said, "I mean, there's always a truth within a joke."

The remarks were captured on video. Other Israeli League players interviewed said they would be unconcerned about having a gay teammate.

Stoudemire's 14-year NBA career with the Suns, Knicks, Cavaliers and Heat ended after last season. He moved on to play with Hapoel Jerusalem, where he is averaging 13 points a game.

Walla Sport said the video was taken last month. It was released Tuesday.

Stoudemire was fined $US50,000 ($65,330) by the NBA in 2012 for using a homophobic slur in response to a fan's taunt on Twitter.

He later apologised, saying: "I am a huge supporter of civil rights for all people. I am disappointed in myself for my statement to a fan. I should have known better and there is no excuse."
