Scores of movie-goers fled the premiere for the new King Kong film in Vietnam, after a giant promotional statue of the gorilla burst into flames.

At the movie premiere for Kong: Skull Island in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday night, visitors were enjoying a performance by fire-twirling dancers before the screening when the fire started.

The five metre-high gorilla statue quickly became engulfed in flames, reportedly after a model volcano had a malfunction.

Video footage shot shows the flames spreading from near the statue's hand towards its head, as the crowds disperse to take shelter while also stopping to take photos.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a Vietnamese representative for the film's producers Warner Bros confirmed no one was injured in the blaze.

The spokesperson added that the Vietnamese fans even "filled the theater to enjoy the film" once the blaze was extinguished by local firefighters.

Kong: Skull Island, filmed partly in Vietnam, is about a group of scientists and adventurers who are attacked by a giant ape on a Pacific island.
