A man has been charged with assaulting police after an early-morning fight in central Melbourne.

Two police officers were taken to hospital with injuries including knee and arm wounds, and a broken finger.

The 29-year-old Keilor man has been charged with 15 offences, including assaulting police, following an incident in Collins Street just after 6am on Sunday.

Ten police cars were called to the scene, near the intersection with King Street.

Witnesses told Fairfax Media they saw up to five men fighting on the street, but four of the men ran when police arrived.

A passing cyclist, Phil, said police were forced to use a Taser and pepper spray to subdue the man.

Another witness, Yusef, said he was accidentally hit with capsicum spray through his car's open window as he drove past.

The police officers were treated at Epworth Hospital for their injuries, while the Keilor man was taken to St Vincent's Hospital suffering from the effects of the capsicum spray.

The Keilor man has been bailed to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on June 19.
