It can be tricky terrain for a man of a certain age to wear a leather jacket. Remember when Malcolm Turnbull wore his on Q&A;? It's a precarious line between looking smart and looking like you're a mild-mannered accountant one blink away from buying a very ill-advised motorcycle.
Thing is, when you're Barack Obama you can kind of wear anything. Mom jeans? No problem. Jerry Seinfeld-style sneakers with said mom jeans? Call it 'normcore' and write a fashion blog about it. A backwards hat? Hell yeah. He's dad-on-holiday-ing-it-up. Hard.
Case in point, the former president (who appears to be shrugging off those 'phone tapping' rumours and also likely planning his next private island sojourn) was snapped wearing a brown leather jacket while visiting the National Portrait Gallery in Washing on the weekend (accompanied by Michelle who looked chic in all-black separates). The jacket was sharp, well-tailored and crucially, didn't have too many details like zips or studding.
In fact, Obama may share one commonality with current President Donald Trump, right now and that's undergoing a slight sartorial overhaul. While Trump's speech to congress saw him swap the lairy red tie for a more subdued one and make friends with a tailor, Obama has swapped the afore mentioned mom jeans for more sophisticated straight leg dark blue ones, paired with a shiny pair of brogues.
He's finished his look with a printed shopping bag (turns out even former Presidents and masters of chill get sucked into the gift shop at the gallery).
