  • 37 reading now

A man who allegedly attempted a carjacking in Sydney was trapped and arrested after his intended victim jumped out of his vehicle and locked the doors.

A 46-year-old plumber was driving his ute along Pitt Street in Haymarket about 5pm on Friday when the offender opened the passenger door and jumped in, police said.

He allegedly punched the driver in the face several times, demanding to be driven to Wagga Wagga.

Passers-by intervened and the driver managed to escape from his ute and remotely locked the doors, trapping the offender inside, police said.

As police went to arrest the man he allegedly punched one officer in the face before capsicum spray was used to subdue him.

The 39-year-old man, from Wagga Wagga, was charged with aggravated assault with intent to take a vehicle, and assaulting and resisting police.
