Hello everyone, I'm a new fan of hockey and I joined the reddit to learn more about the game and see if anyone can answer my question since nowhere else on the internet has seemed to have an answer.
I am a Stars fan and the end of this game 3 against the Blues is the perfect scenario for my question. If you didn't watch what happened the Blues were up 4-3 with less than a minute to go in the game. The Blues then commit a delay of game penalty to give the Stars a 6 on 4 advantage since they pulled Bishop and now there is 43 seconds left. So it's a 6 on 4 powerplay for the Stars and they're losing 3-4 with 43 seconds to go.
This is my question: Why don't losing teams who have a penalty committed against them get to play out the rest of that penalty before regulation ends? I feel like the winning team could essentially ruin a really good play by the losing team and create a penalty thus putting teams back in the faceoff and everyone having to reset (albeit one man now gone for the winning team). Now I know penalties that happen just before the end of the 1st and 2nd period will continue into the next period. But why don't the Stars get to play out that extra 1:20 or so because of the penalty?
Obviously I feel this regulation-extending rule should only apply to the winning team that commits a penalty . I don't think this rule should apply both ways as the losing team could potentially keep committing penalties to keep the game going. And if the Stars had been losing by 2 the rule serves no purpose in existing as well because if the Stars scored on the powerplay the game would've ended right when they scored and they still would've lost by 1.
So to you major hockey fans, is this something that would make a difference in the game? Is this a good idea to implement and try? Or is this something that, in the grand scheme of things, would most likely create little-to-no change to the outcome? I know obviously teams aren't trying to intentionally commit penalties (at least I think not) when they're winning but I know penalties will happen for whatever reason and I feel its a little unfair to those teams to not be able to fully play out the entirety of their power play because of regulation time.
Please let me know what you all think and ask questions if you're still unsure of exactly what I'm asking. I'm still very new to the game of hockey so please let me know if this has already been a question debated before and thrown out for an obvious reason I'm unaware of. I've spent a really long time looking for an answer and haven't found much of anything to explain why they wouldn't extend the game past regulation for a penalty.
