Palau /pəˈlaʊ/ (help·info), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) south of Tokyo. Having emerged from United Nations trusteeship (administered by the United States) in 1994, it is one of the world's youngest and smallest sovereign states. In English, the name is sometimes spelled Belau in accordance with the native pronunciation. It was formerly also spelled Pelew.[3]
Palau's most populous islands are Angaur, Babeldaob, Koror, and Peleliu. The latter three lie together within the same barrier reef, while Angaur is an oceanic island several miles to the south. About two-thirds of the population live on Koror. The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the states of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (28 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.
Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

Palau (
i/pəˈlaʊ/, historically Belau or Pelew), officially the Republic of Palau (Palauan: Beluu er a Belau), is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. The country's population of around 21,000 is spread across 250 islands, which form the western chain of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. The most populous of these is Koror. The capital Ngerulmud is located on the nearby island of Babeldaob, in Melekeok State. Palau shares maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The country was originally settled around 3,000 years ago by migrants from the Philippines and sustained a Negrito population until around 900 years ago. The islands were first visited by Europeans in the 16th century, and were made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1574. Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War in 1898, the islands were sold to Imperial Germany in 1899 under the terms of the German–Spanish Treaty, where they were administered as part of German New Guinea. The Imperial Japanese Navy conquered Palau during World War I, and the islands were later made a part of the Japanese-ruled South Pacific Mandate by the League of Nations. During World War II, skirmishes, including the major Battle of Peleliu, were fought between American and Japanese troops as part of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign. Along with other Pacific Islands, Palau was made a part of the United States-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947. Having voted against joining the Federated States of Micronesia in 1979, the islands gained full sovereignty in 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.

In the mid 80s, 45 or so years after the age of the "aventis," a doctor and a nurse-nun (who grew up together, and now are co-workers in a hospital) identify the corpse of one of the main characters of the "aventis" of their childhood and adolescence. Besides the interesting flashbacks - a chronical of the Civil War in a "typical" Barcelona microcosm itself, the discovery of this body (belonging to someone long presumed dead) leads to other surprises and unresolved doubts, several decades later.

Palau's most populous islands are Angaur, Babeldaob, Koror, and Peleliu. The latter three lie together within the same barrier reef, while Angaur is an oceanic island several miles to the south. About two-thirds of the population live on Koror. The coral atoll of Kayangel is situated north of these islands, while the uninhabited Rock Islands (about 200) are situated to the west of the main island group. A remote group of six islands, known as the Southwest Islands, some 375 miles (600 km) from the main islands, are also part of the country and make up the states of Hatohobei and Sonsorol.

Palau enjoys a tropical climate all year round with an annual mean temperature of 82 °F (28 °C). Rainfall can occur throughout the year, averaging a total of 150 inches (3,800 mm). The average humidity over the course of the year is 82%, and although rain falls more frequently between July and October, there is still much sunshine. Typhoons are rare, as Palau is outside the main typhoon zone.
Consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. Business and tourist arrivals numbered 50,000 in the financial year 2000/2001. The population enjoys a per capita income twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-term prospects for the key tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development.
In July 2004, Palau Micronesia Air was launched with service from Palau to Yap, Guam, Micronesia, Saipan, Australia, and the Philippines. By offering low fares it was planned to be a competitor of Continental Micronesia, however it ceased operations in December of the same year, mainly because of rising fuel prices. Palau Micronesia Air has not restarted operations since but has made a codeshare alliance with Asian Spirit, a carrier that operates flights between Palau and the Philippines (Davao, Cebu, and Manila). There are two flights weekly from Manila via Cebu to Palau and one flight weekly from Davao. Just after few months of service, Asian Spirit ceased its Philippines to Palau route.
Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

Palau Partners Up With Taiwan To Upgrade Telecommunication
The Palau National Communication Corporation (PNCC) through board member Governor Leilani Reklai have entered into an agreement with the Chunghwa Telecom to upgrade PNCC's current networks of 2G to a 3G system. This upgrade once implemented would allow PNCC to provide additional services such as mobile photo and video sharing, mobile Internet use, improved Wi-Fi speed and mobile TV. The memorandum of renewed cooperation and understanding also revitalizes the relationship between both corporations, who have cooperated closely to improve and develop Palau's telecommunication services since 2007. Erik Vereen, Fishing Tour Operator, Island Seed Ltd.: What makes Palau's oceans so attractive to tourists is that there's such a diversity of fish out there that it's very delicate and one of a kind.
Tommy Remengesau, Jr., President of Palau: You come to Palau and it's guaranteed that any snorkeler and any scuba diver will be able to see a shark, and that's the value of conservation.
The ocean is very important for Palau, because really it is our culture, our way of life—it is our economy. It's our self-sustaining source of why we're Palauans.
Ann Singeo, conservationist, Ebiil Society, Inc.: There's a huge offshore fishery that the current fishermen participate in. My husband is one of those people. So he sells it to the hotels. He sells it to the restaurants. We eat it at home. But there's less and less of the fish available in those areas where they're doing offshore fishing. And eventually, if we don't do anything about it, it doesn't get any better—it gets worse.
Erik Vereen: I used to dive ten years ago, and I've noticed a decline in all the fish that we see. But with this marine sanctuary coming—if it is created—our dive sites will be the best in the world.
Yimnang Golbuu, Ph.D., CEO, Palau International Coral Reef Center: We can always argue that we still have a lot, but we have to take action, and we have to take action now, while there are still fish in the water. If you wait until there're no fish, nothing we can do will matter anyway.
Tommy Remengesau, Jr.: I remember my father whacking me across the head with a bamboo pole, because I had caught too much fish. His message to me that day was that, Son, we never should take more than what we need. Think about tomorrow. Don't think just about today.
That's an ocean lesson that I hope everyone will take to heart these days, because we really need to do something serious about the ocean. Life cannot go at the same pace or at the same rate of harvesting the ocean's resources without doing something to regenerate, to repopulate, to rebalance what nature has to offer us.
So the next best thing for us to do is to ensure that at least our children, when they grow up, they'll get a taste of what it is to be an island fisherman, to be content on the ocean.

A group of Uighurs freed from the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay have been flown to Palau, the island nation in the Pacific Ocean.
The move is part of the Obama administration's efforts to close the infamous prison.
However, the former detainees say they feel isolated in Palau, which currently offers asylum to at least 17 men once held by the US.
For the first few arrivals, adjusting to their new freedom in an unknown land poses a major challenge.

This upgrade once implemented would allow PNCC to provide additional services such as mobile photo and video sharing, mobile Internet use, improved Wi-Fi speed and mobile TV.
The memorandum of renewed cooperation and understanding also revitalizes the relationship between both corporations, who have cooperated closely to improve and develop Palau's telecommunication services since 2007.
In August, PNCC entered into an agreement with 03b Networks to increase Palau's bandwidth and capability as well as reduce latency, an agreement that Press Secretary KB Sakuma says would allow for the upgrade of PNCC's network and for the implementation of the Health Cloud System.

this was when i was on a united airlines flight to palau however i actually had a premium economy class ticket and i was upgraded so i was excited to try it out however the seat that i sat at was a rear facing seat so i didn't have to turn my camera around to show you the wingview other than that i enjoyed a pretty good flight on the 747 food review-- i thought was sushi was good however i dont think it came with a side, the bannah split was not bad i did enjoy the ice cream in the split seat review-- i thought the seat was pretty comfortable the features on board were pretty nice unfortunatey the ife screens did not work in the business class which was a bit disappointing but other than that the flight was pretty good

It is geographically part of the larger island group of Micronesia. The country's population of around 21,000 is spread across 250 islands forming the western chain of the Caroline Islands. The most populous island is Koror. The capital Ngerulmud is located in Melekeok State on the nearby island of Babeldaob. The islands share maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The country was originally settled around 3,000 years ago by migrants from the Philippines and sustained a Negrito population until around 900 years ago. The islands were first visited by Europeans in the 18th century, and were made part of the Spanish East Indies in 1885. Following Spain's defeat in the Spanish–American War in 1898, the islands were sold to Imperial Germany in 1899 under the terms of the German–Spanish Treaty, where they were administered as part of German New Guinea. The Imperial Japanese Navy conquered Palau during World War I, and the islands were later made a part of the Japanese-ruled South Pacific Mandate by the League of Nations. During World War II, skirmishes, including the major Battle of Peleliu, were fought between American and Japanese troops as part of the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign. Along with other Pacific Islands, Palau was made a part of the United States-governed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in 1947. Having voted against joining the Federated States of Micronesia in 1979, the islands gained full sovereignty in 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
Politically, Palau is a presidential republic in free association with the United States, which provides defense, funding, and access to social services. Legislative power is concentrated in the bicameral Palau National Congress. Palau's economy is based mainly on tourism, subsistence agriculture and fishing, with a significant portion of gross national product (GNP) derived from foreign aid. The country uses the United States dollar as its currency. The islands' culture mixes Japanese, Micronesian and Melanesian elements. The majority of citizens are of mixed Micronesian, Melanesian, and Austronesian descent, with significant groups descended from Japanese and Filipino settlers. The country's two official languages are Palauan (member of the wider Sunda–Sulawesi language group) and English, with Japanese, Sonsorolese, and Tobian recognised as regional languages.
The 737-800 is a stretched version of the 737-700, and supersedes the 737-400. It also filled the gap left by the decision to discontinue the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and MD-90 following Boeing's merger with McDonnell Douglas. The -800 was launched by Hapag-Lloyd Flug (now TUIfly) in 1994 and entered service in 1998. The 737-800 seats 162 passengers in a typical two-class layout, or up to 189 in one class. It competes with the A320. For many airlines in the U.S., the 737-800 replaced aging Boeing 727-200 trijets and MD-80 series and MD-90 aircraft.
The P-8 Poseidon is a 737-800ERX ("Extended Range") that, on June 14, 2004, Boeing's Integrated Defense Systems (now called Boeing Defense, Space & Security) division beat Lockheed Martin in the contest to replace the US Navy's P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft.

Emiliano personally showcased the GT Wonder Boy, a SMART companion to President Tommy on the key functionalities of how it can help Palau transform into a Smart-City.
The three-day event kick started with a Babeldaob Tour, where distinguished guests from worldwide were invited to see the sprawling, panoramic view on top of Palau's highest peak celebrating nature at its finest.
Following that, was a fundraising Gala Dinner titled “Visionaries- Leading Conservation Forward”. A fundraising gala in support of a conservation programme targeted towards the realization of the coral reef research center in Palau. GT Group is one of the sponsor who contributed $10,000USD towards this programme. The TWG (Technical Working Group) became the implementing body for PICRC (Palau International Coral Reef Center) until the governance of PICRC was put in place. There were many others that played different roles from Palau, Japan and the United States that formed the establishment of PICRC.
The night ended with Emiliano enthusiastically showcasing GT Wonder Boy to a well-known Vietnamese celebrity, Ms Giang My Thi Nguyen who was taken aback by such an innovation by the GT Group.
The grand inauguration was held the next day on 19th January 2017 at the presidential palace situated in Capital Grounds. The ceremony brought together politicians and celebrities from all over. Dr Paul Zhang, Diplomat of the Republic of Palau led his delegation from GT Group to attend the inauguration ceremony.
Tommy’s re-election as president marked his vitality and commitment to his promise to the People of Palau to work hard to “preserve the best, improve the rest” for Palau, for generations to come. He also mentioned about the importance of fostering regional and global partnerships for a progressive economic growth.
Tommy personally addressed a thank you note to Dr Paul Zhang, for attending this ceremony which is a milestone in his life. food review-- i thought was sushi was good however i dont think it came with a side, the bannah split was not bad i did enjoy the ice cream in the split

We enjoyed all the Palau Pacific Resort had to offer. The rooms are gorgeous and the food is fantastic. The sunsets were really unbelievable. I even hula hooped in the sunset! I loved the Polynesian dancing and the great buffet. All the chefs were so friendly and I never had a SCUBA diver pancake before. WOW! What a great team at PPR! I can highly recommend staying at this gorgeous hotel. During our stay, we celebrated Dean's birthday several times--at this hotel with a drink called THE SHARK ATTACK! I loved the Polynesian dancing and the great buffet. All the chefs were so friendly and I never had a SCUBA diver pancake before. WOW! What a great team at PPR! I can highly recommend staying at this gorgeous hotel.
During our stay, we celebrated Dean's birthday several times--at this hotel with a drink called THE SHARK ATTACK! Enjoy all that Palau has to offer--at the edge of Paradise!

Ngirmang, former Social Security Administrator is the third ministerial appointment confirmed by the Senate. On the same day, President Remengesau re-submitted Secilil Eldebechel for the Finance Ministry and Andrew Tabelual for the Education Ministry. Two other ministries - Ministry of State and Ministry of Public Infrastructures, Industries and Commerce are still without appointments.

Palau - Visiting Helen Reef Conservation Area
Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia. It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water. We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. SCUBA Diving in Palau
SORRY THE SOUND IS PARTIALLY REMOVED. I think his is a shame that YouTube makes it hard to find out which songs are in copyright violation. This is a 30 minute, sound-synchronized movie I compiled and edited from over 40 gigs of movies and photos I shot in Palau during July-August, 2012. I stayed on the Ocean Hunter III (Fish n' Fins) with a crew of 7 and 6 other divers. All movies and photos were shot on a SeaLife 1400DC camera with strobe. The weather was primarily rainy or cloudy and it was not the classic Palaun visibility that most see (best to go during November through March). Still was awesome! I hope you enjoy it. Helen Reef is an atoll located about 330 mi south of its mother country, Palau in the western Pacific, and about 220 mi north of Sorong, Indonesia.
It consists of a ringing reef with lagoon, a major deep-water pass, and on the north side, one tiny island of sand and a few trees. All of Helen Reef is a protected conservation area rich in marine life, in and out of the water.
We were lucky to have a chance to visit this isolated area while on route to Palau from Indonesia. Some technical issues, and a forecast for bad weather coming prompted us to stop here. The friendly rangers greeted us after we were safely tied to the conservation area’s mooring. We visited the rustic ranger station on the tiny sand spit of an island. We found them pretty self-sufficient, and resourceful. The island is a bird sanctuary and a nesting ground for hundreds and hundreds of birds squawking day and nite. The rangers tape off the area at the beginning of laying, but later, visitors can walk the length of the island and marvel in the sheer numbers and the beauty of their graceful flight.
During our visit, the Rangers, Louis, Jamos and Matthew, showed us a number of their duties for the Conservation area, and they took us to a number of important sites on the reef. Every day they check-in with the main office in Palau, and file a report. They patrol Illegal fishing activity on the reef, greet visitors, monitor the bird nesting, turtle egg laying, and the Giant Clam farm. They maintain the navigation and mooring buoys as well.
We were able to scuba dive at 3 sites, and record some of the rich marine life of the reef. At the old Japanese cargo shipwreck, only anchors and a few shards of pottery are left, but the reef is pretty with several white-tip lagoon sharks cruising the dramatic drop-off. One dive in the inner lagoon on one of the branches of the pass had the most gigantic lettuce leaf coral formation we’d ever seen. The dive in the Pass was action-packed; we were spinning our necks in every direction, not knowing what to look at next! All the sharks, schools of jacks, rainbow runners, barracudas, the giant grouper, turtle, and the rare and beautiful manta ray, were all seen during one dive!
Visiting the Giant Clam farm was inspiring, we’ve visited other Giant Clam farms, but they are usually instituted after the population has been depleted; at Helen Reef, they are everywhere in every size and every incredible color, and we saw them all over the reef system, not just in the farm area. We were happy to see this easily exploited mollusk protected and allowed to grow to its normal gigantic size.
We thank Jamos and his wife, Samdrina, Louis, and Matthew, the staff who manned the Helen Reef Ranger Station while we were there, for their wonderful hospitality, and for taking us around the reef, and for the fun filming sessions. Filmed in November 2014.

Located in the village of Astris in Thassos Island, Greece, Giola is a beautiful natural lagoon resembling a swimming pool carved into the rocks. It's quite a trek to reach this stunningly blue seaside gem overlooking the Aegean Sea, but visitors say it's worth the hike. Climbing down can be a little tricky because you have to walk on stone, so TripAdvisor recommends wearing adequate shoes (not slippers).

Currently, the world's deepest sea hole at 663 feet, Dean's Blue Hole is "almost twice as deep as any of the other blue holes in the Caribbean that were formed when limestone chambers caved in from above." Dean's Blue Hole is roughly circular at the surface, with a diameter ranging from 25-35 meters .

Zacatón sinkhole is a thermal water filled sinkhole in the Zacatón system — a group of unusual karst features located in Aldama Municipality near the Sierra de Tamaulipas in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is the deepest known water-filled sinkhole in the world with a total depth of 339 meters. Dr. Ann Kristovich set the women's world depth record of 169m during a 1993 dive into the sinkhole.

Located in the state of Bahia in northeast Brazil, Chapada Diamantina National Park is home to spectacular waterfalls, magnificent vistas, and cave systems formed by the rivers that run through the region, where both gold and diamonds have been found. The park's true jewels, however, are the natural pools hidden in its numerous caves.

Palau Road Trip
We decided to rent a car in The Republic of Palau, a chain of islands in the South Pacific between the Philippines and Guam. Across from our hotel, the Palau Hotel was a rent-a-car place that was really inexpensive! $30 a day for the whole day! While Jess loves to plan out adventures, Ben enjoys spur of the moment days. We drove around the 16 states of Palau and saw a few cool spots. We stumbled upon the Etpison Museum and learned about Palauan culture and history and ended the day at the Nagadrmau Waterfall! We got a bit lost looking for the waterfall, but after a 20 minute hike found the main trail and got to play in the water. It then started to rain and we had to stomp around in the mud on the way up. Luckily we had a dry bag to protect our camera gear. All in all, it was quite an ...

We decided to rent a car in The Republic of Palau, a chain of islands in the South Pacific between the Philippines and Guam. Across from our hotel, the Palau Hotel was a rent-a-car place that was really inexpensive! $30 a day for the whole day!
While Jess loves to plan out adventures, Ben enjoys spur of the moment days. We drove around the 16 states of Palau and saw a few cool spots. We stumbled upon the Etpison Museum and learned about Palauan culture and history and ended the day at the Nagadrmau Waterfall!
We got a bit lost looking for the waterfall, but after a 20 minute hike found the main trail and got to play in the water. It then started to rain and we had to stomp around in the mud on the way up. Luckily we had a dry bag to protect our camera gear. All in all, it was quite an adventure!
