King tides to flood Brisbane's low-lying suburbs

  • 265 reading now

Residents in Brisbane's bayside and riverside suburbs have been warned of flooding as the city braces for higher than normal tides over the weekend.

A predicted tide peak of 2.45 metres is expected at the mouth of the Brisbane River just after 8am on Friday morning to be followed by 2.78 metres just before 9am on Saturday morning.

Brisbane City Council warned these high tides could cause localised flooding through to Monday in bayside, riverside and low-lying parts of nearby suburbs.

Residents living near creeks and other waterways may also be affected.

The king tides are expected to be similar to those experienced in June last year, according to council, where a combination of high tides and extreme wet weather caused flooding across Brisbane.

Those living in flood-prone areas have been urged to avoid driving on flood affected roads and avoid parking cars on the street over the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of a possible storm for Sunday, with a 70 per cent chance of showers expected to hit by the afternoon.

Sandbags are available for collection at any time of the day over the weekend from the following locations:

  • Darra - 38 Shamrock Road, Darra
  • Morningside - 9 Redfern Street, Morningside
  • Newmarket - 66 Wilston Road (in car park off Erneton Street), Newmarket
  • Zillmere - 33 Jennings Street, Zillmere
  • Lota - Herbert Street, Lota
