Joe Morgenstern
Fifty Shades of Grey delivers, however ponderously, on its promise of pop transgressiveness.
Richard Roeper
Basically, they made a lousy, mid-2000s-era Katherine Heigl romance with a handful of explicit sex scenes spliced throughout the familiar clichés.
Anthony Lane
Think of it as the "Downton Abbey" of bondage, designed neither to menace nor to offend but purely to cosset the fatigued imagination.
Christy Lemire
It realizes this story is ridiculous in ways the book itself never could. It has an actual sense of humor.
Christopher Orr
It's been said that the movie contains 20 minutes of sex; if this is the case, it must contain at least 40 minutes of Ana biting her lip or putting a pencil in her mouth.
James Berardinelli
Who would have imagined that a movie about sex could be so boring?

The film doesn't culminate in anything. It's a bunch of scenes that end before any kind of satisfying conclusion.

I should NOT HAVE READ MOST OF THE OTHER REVIEWS. IF YOU ALL DIDN'T LIKE THE BOOK OR WHAT IT ENTAILED, THEN HOLY COW WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU WASTE YOUR TIME ON THE MOVIE? Unless perhaps you have cleared all your complaints for the day and wanted to give it one more go rating this movie. Books ARE ALWAYS BETTER. SHOULDN'T EVEN HAVE TO SAY THIS. I prefer the movie with all the details. Maybe I am just terrible. Actually was so excited to watch it on the big screen, but my man wouldn't allow me. Haha so dumped him and four days later. Tada! Wanted Henry Cavill and forget the one girl's name. Fell in love with these two however. Didn't write the books and She picked who she felt fit.
Please recast Ana and Christian...Books were better The movie is almost unwatchable. I have just about finished reading book #4 Grey & since I read the first 3 books over a year ago, I was curious how the movie would be. The movie really lacked the points that grabbed you and keep your attention like the books did. These actors were not suitable for these roles. Overall, I'm disappointed which is why I have been hesitant to see this movie. I should have gone with my instinct & reread the books instead..DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WATCHING...DISAPPOINTING
My Inner Goddess was bored watching this. The books are a fun treat to read, but the movie just lacked .. well .. everything. The script seemed rushed and hurried, the actors portraying Ana and Christian had absolutely no chemistry at all. This movie was boring. I thought it would be a naughty delight to watch with my boyfriend, but we actually both fell asleep!! lol To each their own, but I was disappointed with this half-assed hollywood interpretation. I wanted "more". They should have made it into an HBO series instead if anything!
Lovely Portrayal I am appalled at the haters of this movie. I understand that some of you are relying on your religious beliefs, while others a just F-ing ignorant morons that expected too much and didn't get it.... I have never read the books, nor do I plan to. This film, in and of itself, is a beautiful portrayal of a beginning D/s relationship between an experienced Dominant and an extremely novice submissive. It lays out the foundation for the other movies to build on. Everything that happened in Christian's playroom was consensual and done properly. The film was done very tastefully, I don't think a different Director could have done better. I especially liked the last elevator scene. Christian runs up to Ana and she turns to him and sternly says no, and he stops dead in his tracks. Even after doing things to her that she asked for and didn't like, he didn't try to force her to stay, but he did take "NO" as a no. That shows the most character of all, something all men should take note of. For those morons out there, learn to open your minds a little more. You might just learn a few things.
This movie is messed up the dude needs some holy water in his life. She needs some Jesus for saying yes to his 'contract'. Worst movie I am afraid to watch the second one. I would rate this no stars but I am not able to. So much sexual actions going on and they show it to, private parts, sex scenes. The dude has a play room and he whoops her in there. She is a submissive or in other words sex slave. I recommend you not watch this unless you to are OBSESSED with sex.
Hard to follow! The movie started out dead on the book, but then it started to skip parts half way through! It mentioned Jose's art gallery show, but then left out the part where Ana went with Christian and he bought the pictures of her on display. From there it just lost me! I didn't like the actors either. Jamie Doran was not a good choice for Christian at all! I liked the books! The movie was just a disappointment!
Offensive? I can't help but laugh at the people on here saying it's sexual assault, rape etc. First off it's a movie...secondly of course there are aggressive sex scenes. He is a Dominant , she's a submissive...Google submissive. It's two consenting adults, she's not being forced into anything. If people find that lifestyle so offensive, then why are you watching it to begin with? Go read a Danielle Steele novel, pop on your lifetime movie and quit complaining about a lifestyle you disagree with.
Bored housewives unite! The books were poorly written and obviously the Author has zero experience in this lifestyle. She didn't research it either. I couldn't finish this joke of a movie. Those giving this movie 5 stars and saying it represents the BDSM lifestyle have no clue and are full of it when they act like they know. The popularity of the books and movie only proves how many bored housewives there are on the planet and I feel sad for them.
Boring..had to turn it off.. I was recommended this movie by a friend. This movie was supposed encapsulate sexual tension. It didnt. This movie was supposed to be a turn on, it wasnt. I watched this with my wife and she literally fell asleep. Im amazed that people were able to watch this boring garbage the entire way through. How can you make a movie about this subject matter and make it a bore?? I havent read the books, but I wouldnt recommend this to anyone other than diehard fans.
Twisted Evil Against Women Save your time. Seek light and good, and God will lead you to a very enjoyable, healthy relationship. Proving love by allowing abuse is not for you. Abuse and insanity from men should be dealt with by wise and objective counselors. Do not tolerate abuse. Believe and escape with your life. Opening doors to victimization against yourself is foolish and sets you up for more and more. Also, it aids and abets a man in opening doors in his soul to evil. He will become hard wired in evil and demonized.
I Thoroughly Enjoyed This Movie I had been warned by others that had seen the movie not to watch it. Stating it was nothing like the book and how upsetting it was that too many of the "good parts" of the book were left out. I can tell you from watching this at home if they had included everything in the book the movie would have been over 3 hours long, and I'm sorry but I have things to do. That being said, I LOVED IT. The cast did an excellent job of staying as close to the characters of the book as possible. There was passion and the development of love. If you read the book it would be clear that the characters are in their twenties and are novice at not only having a relationship but how to express their feelings. I too can not wait to see the next installment of the movie. Now, I'm going to re-read the book. LOL
Hated it!!!! It took me over a year to finish the book which is a big indicator that I was not that into it. It definitely didn't hold my interest enough to purchase the 2nd and 3rd book. I knew I didn't want to go to the theater to see the movies so I decided to rent the movie for much cheaper. Well, just like the book, I was disappointed. After about an 1.5 hours of half watching I finally gave up on it. I wish I could get my money back for the book and the movie.
Waste of time and money I m speechless ... what a waste of my time and money .. shallow characters, poor script...horrible acting...reading the reviews..movie has obviously done disservice to the original book...A random chick with average looks in her own la la land thought this billionaire tycoon was out there loving her ...When actually he is just looking for 16th victim to his confused but savage sexual needs....character anastasia gives taste of stupid , dumb, dreamy teenage girl, and Mr grey a predator. .anything but classy
Dumb Movie This movie did not make sense. Sadomasochistic billionaire falls in love with college virgin. Really? He claims to have done this with 15 other women, so how does he fall in love with a goofy plain chick? I'm sure he could have the hottest chicks on the planet. I'm confident the book made more sense, but the movie was rushed as they tried to make this into a love story in a short amount of time.
I was not expecting much from this, but I think it was worse than I thought. The dialogue is terribly written, the story really boring and the fatal attraction between the two characters completely intangible. Most of the fault goes to the writing, which apparently is word by word from the novel. It's not even entertaining in a ridiculous kind of way! I do not recommend it.
Ugh Insensitive sadistic rich dude can afford to buy the love life he can't get with his personality. One that involves finding a weak willed submissive to sign a contract and be his sex toy. But he kinda loves her. Womp womp. Yeah, he buys her stuff and she lives in a palace but the whole concept of owning people with contracts is enough to make you vomit. A huge step back for society.
Women Love It. We Hate It. I'm apalled this garbage got as far as it did. To me it's just another BSDM. The female gender can be found, however, reading smut everywhere. This is hopefully the last time Cinemax is packed for a pornographic film and schoolgirls are allowed to read porn in public. Any positive ratings are most likely from women. 1/10 as a legitimate dealy.
Good grief! Not sure what was worst, If the acting or the script?!!! This was painful to watch, painful to listen to and I have never been so eager to see a movie come to an end. The only reason why I finish watching it is because I had already paid for the rental and I wasn't to get my money back.
Terrible in every way This movie was worse than the book it's based on, if that's even possible. Terrible (and disturbing) premise, terrible writing, terrible acting, terrible direction - the only thing that want terrible was the budget, and even that wasn't enough to salvage this train wreck. Don't waste your time or money.
Horrible movie depicting an abusive relationship This is not sexy. He stalks her, intimidates her, is jealous and controlling, and that is all before they get into the bedroom (which does not depict a consensual BDSM relationship). It is abuse being packaged as romantic and sexy. If anyone treats you the way Christian treats Ana, run for your life.
Blah Boring. If you want to see it for the bdsm scenes just watch secretary. That one is so much sexier. Anna was obnoxious to me. It wasnt offensive. Just boring all around. Actors did not have any chemistry. It was just a really bad fanfiction come to life. Oh. Wait.
Awful movie There is NEVER, ANY forced violence or anger in ANY BDSM relationship. This movie is just bad from start to finish and all they did was steal the script from "Secretary" and make an awful movie. Don't waste your time or money.
This movie was fifty shades of flat drama, stiff actors with zero chemistry and boring dialog. Big disappointment! The script was more submissive than Anna's breathy monotone lines. Don't waste your money, please!
Not recommended unless you liked the books. Personally, I couldn't get through the books because I felt as if they were written for bored housewives. The dialogue was ridiculous. Sadly, it carried into the movie. I watched the movie, however, to see what all the hoopla was about.
Messed Up So messed up. She is basically a sex slave. All I had to do was watch the trailer to know that if I watched this movie I would be scarred for life! And I also read half of that messed up book. Before I stopped because I didn't want to traumatized for the rest of my life.
Love, Hate You will either love or hate this movie.. I saw this movie in the theatre with my girlfriend and I have to say it wasn't for me. She on the other hand, enjoyed it. It was filmed well but I just couldn't get into the whole sexual torture love theme. There was a couple of old ladies sitting near us and I had to laugh, cause I could only imagine what they must be thinking. If you aren't a fan of the book, or a huge pervert (lol), don't waste your time. It's basically Pretty Woman meets Ron Jeremy. Haha
To those who don't understand the movie Yeah I may not have read the books but when it comes to movies i fully understand what the story is. The things you've not understood is yeah he may have had many women before her but she is the only one that he can feel a connection with. So sit down and really pay attention to the storyline I don't mean just sit there and watch it I mean really sit down and really watch in between the lines of the story being told.
Worst movie ever Absolutely horrific. This is not romance. This film displayed a false sense of what love is. Just a story about a man sexually abusing women. Waste of time and money. If I could give it zero stars I would do it a hundred times
Book or Not, It's still bad Is this the worst film ever? No, not really. Is it so bad its good? No, it's not. This isn't a good movie, Dakota Johnson gives a wonderful performance for the most part considering the movie she's in. The cinematography is astonishingly beautiful; if you were to mute the film you would see that this is a beautiful LOOKING film. Yet beyond that, this is a really bad movie. It's dumb, the writing from the book is beyond horrid, and really it wouldn't be so bad if it just weren't so mind-numbingly boring.
Bad Acting, Boring I was unfortunate enough to watch this movie. The acting was terrible and very forced. The sec scenes didn't make up for how bad the acting was. I wouldn't recommend this movie, unless you want to introduce your SO to BDSM.
Amazing only who have truly experienced love will enjoy this masterpiece. Have you ever loved someone beyond meaning? I feel as though many who down this movie don't comprehend the messages. This strange movie astonishingly shows love beyond lust, wouldn't anybody reconsider being with somebody so open; about there weird fetishes and problems. My mind drifted on the previous unconditional love I once had; how rare. The way they looked at each other, pay attention; and the weird connection. This type of love is like a once in a lifetime experience. I enjoyed this very much.
Movies are never as good as books.... But as a stand alone movie it was great. I think the "bad acting" was misconstrued. He was playing the part of a contagious "uncomfortable around people", "very serious boy" who grew up to be a man. I think more will be revealed thru the subsequent movies and you realize that the bad acting is actually the character's personality.
I'm obsessed with Fifty Shades I loved it. I got my movie today and will buy the Blu Ray dvd combo next friday. I love the story n loved how great the actors were in bringing them to the screen. I will admit that my biggest wish would be that Dakota and Jamie will be a real couple....I can dream. I can't wait for Fifty Shades Darker...my fave of the three n see how the script is gonna finally make sense. If ignorant ppl call this porn then I love my porn. Dnt use the word rape cause not once in the movie or book dnt he forces himself
Book was eh, movie was bland I went in w/ mild expectations, & left w/ disappoinment. Character development & personality of Ana was bland. Grey was a block of marble, handsome but cold. BDSM communities cringe at this series & I can understand why. Poor representation of what it means to have that sort of relationship. There was at least one moment where consent was if-y and that's where I got annoyed, but mostly it was a very overly controlling relationship. I can see liking it if I hadn't encountered gaslighting or seen verbal abuse
This movie is considered adult romance, so yes, it is going to involve SEX. Christian Grey is a dominant, so yes he is going to be DOMINANT. Anastasia agreed to be his SUBMISSIVE, so yes, she is going to be SUBMISSIVE. He gets her consent everytime he touches her and most of the time she is the one initiating it. Quit bashing this movie because you don't agree with it. It's an amazing film. The sex scenes were fantastic, they were well put together without it being too crude as I expected. The dialog was outstanding and the acting was phenomenal. I didn't have high hopes as I started this movie but I quickly found myself drawn in. I will definitely be watching the second and third.
Could've been so much more... They should've settled for a bearded Christian 😂. Jamie Dornan's sexy peak is when he has his scruff 😙. I felt that he should've been directed towards a more charismatic, sultry and confident character. Arrogance at the beginning made up a portion of 'confidence', but there's still that underlying difference. Then again, I haven't really read the whole novel to see the type of character E.L. James was going for. I could describe Dakota's acting as a tad bit awkward at times- maybe that's just Anastasia
50 shades of grey Horrid worse then the book. The author was awful in repeating the same adjectives. I'd compare it to a high school students first attempt at writing. Thought movie would be better. It was boringly bad.
Loved the books Judgemental Morons...the relationship isn't abusive..if these idiots had ever been in one they'd never say such a thing..he doesn't ever do anything she didn't agree to, if you object to kinky sex why watch movie and read books
God awful So bad that I fell asleep and the plot makes no sense this guy could have any girl in the world and chooses this nerd girl who is a virgin. Don't waste your time or money on this and I can bet this the book probably sucks to
Worst! Sick! Book and movie both are horrible! How come this is a romance book!!! It's sick! Full of sadism and violence! It's not a love. Worried this totally wrong and false presentation of love leads young people to a miserable life and sorrows!
