The CBD is full of places that workers can grab a great coffee and a quick bite to have on the run. However, there is now a rise in restaurants and cafes running a full breakfast service from early in the morning to cater for the business crowd.
Solo diners are fuelling up on a substantial breakfast as are others having morning meetings over eggs on toast rather than Caesar salads or steak.
What's not to like about a meeting over breakfast? People are getting their coffee fix, the food comes out quickly and it's all over and done with before the stresses of the day start. And this is coming from someone who believes most meetings can be an email!
Here are my top five picks for breakfast in the CBD:
Greenhouse
100 St Georges Terrace, Perth
Breakfast served Mon to Fri 7am–10.30am, Sat 8am–11am
Being located centrally on the Terrace makes Greenhouse a great choice for CBD workers. You can't miss this cube shaped building with its rooftop trees and walls covered in plants.
Inside, customers will find plenty of small tables with a separated side section more suited for those wanting a meeting.
The Greenhouse is well known for its perfect 62 degree eggs, which they were serving up well before Masterchef had introduced them to the masses. These slow cooked eggs are kept at a constant 62 degrees where the protein stays in a soft silky state. They make for a great breakfast! If slow cooked eggs aren't your thing, then there are also choices such as fruit toast, dalia porridge and huevos rancheros.
Beans come courtesy of Northbridge Coffee Roasters who supply both a single origin and blend. Cold pressed juices and house made soft drinks are also available.
Petition Kitchen
State Buildings – Cnr of Barrack Street and St Georges Tce
http://www.petitionperth.com/kitchen/
Breakfast served Mon to Fri from 7am, Sat to Sun from 8am
If you hear a suit refer to another as "judge" then you are in the right place. Located near the courts in the beautifully restored State Buildings is Petition Kitchen.
It's popular with the legal types and those working at the eastern end of the CBD. There's plenty of room for larger groups wanting meetings, as well as comfy leather bench seats for couples and solo diners.
The menu starts off with the usual muesli and fruit salad type dishes and quickly escalates into some cheffy options such as sardines ($16) with heirloom tomato, croutes, oregano, cambray curd, and baked slow eggs ($19) with beans, ham hock and kransky sausage.
For $19 customers can have the "everything breakfast" - boiled egg, slab bacon, yoghurt, fruit and toast with juice, tea or coffee. All the food groups are covered to set you up for a day of hard work.
Mano o Mano supplies the coffee from their roasters at Gordon Street Garage up the road. If the days aren't long gone for a tipple during work hours at your workplace, the bloody marys here are spot on. Smoothies with a protein kick are also available.
Small Print
125 St Georges Terrace, Perth (Brookfield Place)
http://www.printhall.com.au/small-print-baker-coffee-maker/
Breakfast served Mon to Fri 6.30am–11am
This café is the sweet little sister to Print Hall. It has the quality in service and food that one would expect from the Brookfield Place stable.
The menu features the full range of breakfast choices. From dishes such as bircher muesli ($13) and eggs on toast ($13.50) to more hefty choices such as salty and sweet waffles ($16) served with fried eggs, bacon, maple syrup, dried tomatoes and wild mushroom bruschetta ($18) served with poached eggs, basil pesto, roquette, feta, balsamic glaze.
Small Print is a coffee aficionado's haven. Espresso, cold brew, pour over and filter are available with ever changing single origins and blends. Speciality teas are also on offer.
There is plenty of seating inside and out with a closed off back section that would suit those wanting a meeting without the noise of the kitchen and customers. Small bar tables are perfect for solo diners.
Tiisch
Corner Hay Street & Milligan Street, Perth.
Breakfast served Mon to Fri 7am–11am, Sat 8am–2pm
Hanging vines, windowsill herb gardens and loads of bright natural light make Tiisch both a calming and invigorating place to start your day.
A couple of large central tables can be booked ahead, making them a good choice for team catch-ups. Comfy smaller tables are great for solo dining or meetings of 2-4 people.
The menu leans savoury with plenty of options for vegetarians. Slab bacon or kransky sausage can be added as side to make those vego breakfasts a bit meatier.
Matcha pancakes ($16) served with strawberry, roasted rhubarb, vanilla bean gelato, honey and chamomile syrup is a popular choice for those with a sweet tooth. Avocado toast ($17) with hummus, fresh cheese, preserved lime, herbs, poached egg will leave all other smashed avocado dishes for dead. The suggested addition of a slab of bacon is well worth it.
Coffee is by Dukes with both a single origin and a blend available. Customers can choose from traditional milk coffees, pour over, cold brew, French press and batch brew. Non-coffee drinkers are well looked after with a selection of specialty teas, juices and Kommunity Brew kombucha on offer.
Uncle Joe's Mess
74-76 King Street, Perth
https://www.unclejoes.com.au/mess/
Breakfast served Mon to Fri 7am–3.30pm, Sat 8am–2.30pm
Uncle Joes. Its vines, palms and hanging gardens have created an oasis in the city that makes for a relaxing breakfast before heading to the stresses of work.
For those wanting to have a meeting, there are plenty of small tables for an intimate catch up, as well as a courtyard area if more space is needed.
The menu is concise and interesting. At the lighter end of the scale there are dishes such as granola ($12.90), acai bowl ($17) and eggs on toast ($13). For those wanting something more substantial, there are dishes such as French toast ($16.50) with flambéed banana, prosciutto and marscapone, and bacon béarnaise ($19) – smoked bacon, poached eggs, dill béarnaise and paprika on toast.
A cup of joe from Joe's will not disappoint. It's a custom blend from local roaster Dimattina. They have also got cold brew on the go for those balmy mornings Perth has been treated to lately.
Need your manicured beard or short, back and sides tidied up? No problem. Uncle Joes is also a barbers!
