| Efficiency gains from new software system |
The Press Council is implementing a new complaints-handling software system that will go live on or before next Thursday, 30 June. |
| Staff working at member publications who receive correspondence from the Press Council on complaints matters will notice slight changes in the layout and content of certain documents in the days after the system goes live. For staff at the Council secretariat, the new system will mean substantially increased efficiencies in document-handling, data collection and statistical reporting. |
| Until now, Press Council complaints were handled using an older filing system, and all correspondence and records had to be generated manually for each individual case. The new software, used by virtually all consumer and complaints-handling organisations in Australia — including every state and territory Ombudsman — will allow for automated generation of routine correspondence and records. This will increase productivity and free up staff time and financial resources for other uses. |
| “This has been a very big project to bring to fruition, with a substantial investment of money and staff time,” said Executive Director John Pender. “I am confident, however, that this is money and time well spent, as it will bring the Council to the next stage of its continuing drive to work more efficiently and effectively in providing excellent service to member publications and to the public.” |
| “The efficiency gains will be obvious on a day-to-day basis, but there will also be other important benefits; for example, in the very detailed year-end reporting and sophisticated analysis of complaints issues and trends that will now be possible.” |
