One Nation's Perth pub event 'unacceptable and unlawful'

  • 120 reading now

Prominent Perth lawyer John Hammond says an event with free drinks and pizza to be hosted by Pauline Hanson's at a pub in Perth is a type of "electioneering" that's "unacceptable and unlawful."

Ms Hanson is due to appear at the Paddington Ale House in Mount Hawthorn on Thursday night, and the 'Pots & Pizzas with Pauline' event's advertising promises "free pizza and the first 100 drinks on her."

Pauline Hanson impersonator crashes press conference

A woman dressed up as Pauline Hanson in a wedding dress has yelled a rant at a Colin Barnett press conference. Vision: Nine News Perth.

The One Nation leader is visiting WA in an eleventh hour effort to shore up support for her party, which is tipped to win the balance of power in the upper house, but is also beset with internal strife.

The event at the Paddington has stoked plenty of controversy, with the pub's Facebook events page swamped with both critical and supportive comments.

One person quipped "what's the dress code? white?", while another said "The Paddo has every right to put on whatever event it wants... If you don't like her don't go - simple."

But Mr Hammond believes if the event goes ahead it could be in breach of WA election laws.

"The Electoral Act 1907 prohibits the supply of food or drink or entertainment after the nominations have been declared – if the supply of the food or drink is being done with the intention to influence the vote of an elector," Mr Hammond told WAtoday.

"The Electoral Act is very broad – it even speaks of any person who offers any benefit to induce any vote, or any support of any candidate.

"Such conduct can lead to the disqualification of any candidate involved in the behaviour."

Despite the controversy, sixty people have indicated online they will be attending with a further 90 saying they are interested.

Meanwhile, a counter demonstration has sprung up online with the group United Against Bigotry and Racism promising to disrupt the event.

"While she's inside distributing inane nationalism and racist pizza, join United Against Bigotry and Racism outside to protest against One Nation's disgusting Islamophobia and racism," the group said.

"Let's show Hanson and all her revolting supporters that racism is not welcome here!"

'Pots & Pizzas with Pauline'  is set to start at 6.30pm with free entry.
