In news that will surprise no one, an International Women's Day tweet sent out by US President Donald Trump was not particularly well received.
The president, whose run for office came to be characterised by sexual assault allegations and a tape of him boasting about being able to "grab" women "by the pussy", tweeted a message stating he has "tremendous respect" for women.
"I have tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and our economy," Trump tweeted on the March 8 holiday.
"On International Women's Day, join me in honouring the critical role of women here in America & around the world."
In little time at all, Twitter users jumped on the tweet, calling Trump out for possibly presenting alternative facts based on his previous conduct.
Especially Ted Cruz's wife, women you bragged about assaulting & accusers you said were too ugly to sexually harass. https://t.co/uO7Cuon2vl

Many used quotes Trump had said in the past to demonstrate his respect for women may not actually be that tremendous.
"You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever." https://t.co/PWZnjb6yjX

"I just start kissing them – it's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. When you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything." https://t.co/WZGl1B1ga5

"Yeah, she’s really something, and what a beauty, that one. If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father..." https://t.co/oN0NS7rHtT

Celebrities joined in on the action, with Star Wars actor Mark Hamill tweeting, "I'm sure [Trump's] tweet 'grabbed' their respect."
Late night show host Samantha Bee joked, "I wonder how many drafts it took for him to not include 'except for f---in' Rosie O'Donnell.'"
For those still playing the "what would the world be like if Hillary won" game (which has, over the past couple of months, gone from an exercise in political hypotheticals to a very long and potent round of King's Cup), Clinton also used Twitter to celebrate International Women's Day.
The former presidential candidate turned her avatar on the social media site to a red square, in solidarity with the "A Day Without a Woman" general strike organised by the Women's March movement in the US.
She also retweeted a story about a primary school student who had founded a "female empowerment" club at her school.
"On #InternationalWomensDay I'm thinking about this young girl, & all the others like her out there," Clinton wrote.
