There is no question about it: The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards absolutely slayed. Taking over one the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden in New York City, the 2016 VMAs was certainly a blank canvas that each artist made their own.

Opening the show was our woman of the night, Video Vanguard honoree Rihanna, who performed a dancey medley of "Don't Stop the Music," "Only Girl (In The World)," "We Found Love, " and "Where Have You Been." Riri then threw it back to our social media correspondents – Key and Peele masquerading as @TheShamester and @LizardSheeple – who delivered laughs, tweets and truth bombs through the night. The first award of the night, Best Hip Hop Video, was given to an absent Drake for his performance in Hotline Bling, and was promptly followed by an exercise-themed performance of "Side to Side" by Ariana Grande featuring Nicki Minaj. Yep, we were all sweating. Calvin Harris videoed in from the UK to thank his fans for his Best Male Video win for "This Is What You Came For" featuring Rihanna just before Future took to the VMA stage to "F**k Up Some Commas."

But of course, the VMAs wouldn't be the VMAs without a Kanye West monologue. The self-proclaimed legend took to the stage to mark his spot in history and drop the latest video for his song "Fade." Bad Girl Ri took to the stage for the second time of the night, giving us life with a reggae-themed medley just before Nick Jonas had us drooling over his performance of "Bacon" featuring Ty Dolla $ign. But it wasn't until Queen Bey hit the stage, performing her best hits from "Lemonade" that we all officially died and went to heaven. Seriously, Beyoncé doesn't just set the bar, she is the bar.

Once Fifth Harmony graciously accepted the award for Best Collaboration Video for their hit, "Work From Home" featuring Ty Dolla $ign, the Pop Princess herself, Britney Spears, danced her way to the stage for a world premiere performance of "Make Me/Me Myself & I" featuring G-Eazy. Rihanna had us grooving one more time with a third medley of "Needed Me," "Pour It Up," and "Bitch Better Have My Money," just before Beyoncé rightfully earned the night's biggest award--Video of the Year--for "Formation." And if that didn't make us ugly cry enough, for her final performance of the night, Ri busted out the ballads giving us all the feels. Emotions reached their peak, though, when a previously MIA Drake came out dressed to the nines to honor Rihanna with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and profess his undying love for her. Rihanna closed the show by accepting the Moonman in the name of her country, and all those who supported her. We're so happy for you Ri, you deserve it!
