SPD Crime Dashboard

The Seattle Police Department launched its Crime Data Dashboard, gives Seattle residents access to the same statistical information on incidents of property and violent crime used by SPD commanders, officers and analysts to direct police patrols. The Department developed the Crime Data Dashboard as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public trust through transparency and to continue its push to effectively address crime and disorder in the City through its data-driven and community policing approach.

Here's a fabulous example of what can be done with data from data.seattle.gov. Using Processing, (www.processing.org), Zubin Rao created an animation depicting Seattle building permit activity, charting permits by location and animating the permits based on dollar amount and issue date. The size of the circle is based on the dollar amount of the construction cost and grows to full size over the course of a year. As the time slider on the right descends, circles from previous years "ghost" out and disappear.

Mayor Murray signs historic Open Data Executive Order

Mayor Ed Murray today renewed the City of Seattle’s commitment to transparency by signing an Executive Order directing all City departments to comply with a new open data policy, which he announced during last week’s State of the City address.

Seattle police participate in White House Police Data Initiative

This past spring the White House launched the Police Data Initiative, which has mobilized 30 jurisdictions, including from the outset, Seattle, to take fast action on publishing policing data such as incident response, officer involved shootings, use of force, an traffic stops. In 2011 SPD was the first to publish incident data, and is committed to the Police Data Initiative and making more data available.
