Kindering

After suffering a stroke as a newborn, Beckley experienced severe impairments. His family found Kindering, who showed them they were not alone. “This isn’t just a job to these folks,” his mother, Julie, said of his care team. Thanks to Kindering, Beckley is defying the odds, playing with friends and entertaining his parents with stories starring his favorite puppy dog. As Julie says, “His future is full of possibilities.”
The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army

Homeless, injured and unable to work, former prison inmate Albert was growing desperate. Local shelters were routinely full, and many opportunities were permanently closed to him. But a program at The Salvation Army helped him with housing and basic needs. He learned about food banks, and went to the dentist for the first time in 20 years. “The Salvation Army was an answer to my prayers,” he says. “Without it, I would be on the street, back in jail or worse.”
Youth Eastside Services

Youth Eastside Services

When Judith started kindergarten, she didn’t speak a word of English. And even as a high-schooler, she felt weighed down by stereotypes of Hispanic Americans. But through Youth Eastside Services’ Latino H.E.A.T. (Hispanos en Acción Together) program, Judith gained self-confidence and made friends. Today, she works as a youth mentor, helping others feel part of a safe and inclusive community. “I love what I do,” she says, “and I do what I love.”
Sound Generations

Sound Generations

Octogenarian Ms. Garrison suffers from both diabetes and cancer. She can’t leave her apartment without help, and she has trouble with simple tasks like preparing meals. “I just do not go out because I physically cannot do it,” she said. Ms. Garrison relies on Sound Generations for their Meals on Wheels and Volunteer Transportation programs, which help her continue to live independently despite her health conditions.

Before entering foster care, eight-year-old Leroy had never been to school, watched TV or had a friend. Years of isolation had taken its toll, but Treehouse provided him tutoring, counseling and even “cool clothes” to ease him into a normal life. He discovered music and wrestling, and is now attending Grays Harbor college. “I am so excited to be pursuing a degree,” Leroy says. “It’s only a matter of time before I get what I have been working for.”
Wellspring

Wellspring

Soon after arriving in town, Rose could no longer afford housing, and was staying in an outdoor camp with her three children. But with the help of Wellspring Family Services, they managed to pull themselves out. They secured stable housing, and Rose began an internship with Wellspring’s Baby Boutique. Her sons attended Wellspring’s Early Learning Center to help them process their trauma and prepare for school. Rose eventually finished her internship and started college. Her future is bright, and so is her family’s.

Disabled single mom Dejah and her two kids were homeless when they became involved with Atlantic Street Center. Dejah and her young son enrolled in the Parent-Child program, which supports early literacy and the parent’s role as the child’s first teacher. Since taking advantage of the support offered by Atlantic Street Center, Dejah’s daughter reports positive changes in the family, which will soon move into a home of their own.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Jada had never been on good terms with “new.” Struggling in a new school, with a new adoptive family, she was feeling unsure about her new Big Sister. But Jennifer wasn’t going anywhere. She listened to Jada’s fears, and responded naturally. Three years later, they’re still going strong. They cook together and go to the gym. Jennifer is even teaching Jada to drive, which can make any adult a little nervous, but Jennifer says Jada is doing great.
Asian Counseling and Referral Service

Asian Counseling and Referral Service

After her father passed away and her marriage fell apart, Laos-born Pheangdi found herself without a roof over her head. Depression and diabetic kidney failure created further challenges, as did her poor English. Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) helped Pheangdi manage her medical appointments and find stable housing. They also provided an interpreter and enrolled her in ESL classes. Today, Pheangdi continues to attend classes, working on her English and her goal of becoming a U.S. citizen.

At age three, Jaxon had been kicked out of two preschools for violently acting out. At the same time, his mother, Alexa, struggled to overcome her own traumatic childhood. They turned to Childhaven, where Jaxon found comfort in daily routines and outdoor play, and Alexa learned to parent with confidence. “I finally feel I know how to show Jaxon how much I love him,” says Alexa. “Our future is brighter because of Childhaven.”

Hopelink

Barbara packed her three young children in a car, fleeing a home where she didn’t feel safe. Hopelink helped her chart a new course, providing a secure place for them to live and support to start a new life. “Like a thousand hands, holding me up,” is how she describes it. Today, Barbara has a stable career and serves on Hopelink’s board of directors, committed to helping others get back on their feet for good.

Kent Youth and Family Services

Struggling with an upended schedule and communication issues, Jackson and his grandparents sought out counseling at Kent Youth Services. The agency helped them prepare for changes at home, and with routines. They also helped Jackson use words to express his feelings, and feel more confident in handling challenges. “I feel like I can do it now,” he says, “and a couple months ago, I didn’t know if I could.”

Since 1971, Hopelink has helped homeless and low-income children, families and seniors, as well as people with disabilities.
In addition to operating food banks and an emergency shelter, Hopelink provides transitional housing, counseling, child care, transportation and adult literacy training.
