Meghan Markle has commenced her princess transformation

  • 17 reading now

We are gathered here today to witness the union of Meghan Markle and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge's styling team in holy matrimony.

If there was ever a doubt the Suits star wasn't going to become a member of the royal family, her weekend jaunt to Jamaica with boyfriend Prince Harry just quashed them.

Prince Harry condemns 'harassment' of girlfriend

'A line had been crossed', writes Prince Harry about press coverage of his new American girlfriend, actress Meghan Markle.

The fact the couple were photographed holding hands notwithstanding, and regardless of potential titles for the pair being bandied about, the fashion transformation of the woman who could become the first Duchess of Sussex, has begun and speaks volumes of the state of their relationship.

For the beach wedding of Harry's best mate she donned a printed maxi dress by one of the Duchess of Cambridge's favourite designers, Erdem.

It was a dress that would also look right at home in Princess Mary's wardrobe. All three are "commoners" who will have a lot in common should Markle and Harry make it down the aisle. Before that though, what lies ahead for her, like "our Mary" and Kate before her, will be hardcore princess training prior to joining the House of Windsor.

Yes, that's despite Harry – lover of coloured man-jewellery who sports a beard that makes him look like a barista/actor – Markle will undergo the biggest transformation.

Remember when the Duchess was just Kate Middleton? Gone are the days of her mini skirts and paisley babydoll dresses. Markle also appears to be following suit, making subtle changes to her wardrobe as their relationship kicks on.

Markle, the actor, humanitarian and blogger is a queen of smart casual chic, but now appears to be channelling a more modern day princess vibe. Since November, her glossy, Pippa Middleton-esque hair is glossier and her lithe limbs have been shielded from pesky paps by longer hemlines.

I keep telling myself: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because her laid back style happened", but one genre where she may be able to hold onto a bit of the "old Meghan" is her choice of footwear.

While the Duchess digs a court shoe and occasional wedge from 2004, Markle always manages to sparkle south of her ankles. On behalf of all royal watchers, including the new Meghan Markle style watch blog, Meghan, please don't ditch the Hunters when you move into Kensington.

While the rest of her wardrobe will be 'Commonwealth appropriate', her feet should be allowed to stay in the Republic of Markle, as she's a big supporter of up-and-coming names in the fashion world. Like New York designer Sarah Flint who has noticed a spike in sales since Markle and Harry went public last year.

"I have not met her - we've emailed back and forth, and what I can tell you is that she writes hand-written thank you notes for her shoes, which is the nicest thing ever, because most celebrities don't do that," Flint told InStyle. "[Markle] has been a big fan of the brand since the beginning. And I love that an up-and-coming actress would support an up-and-coming brand, even before all this publicity with her new relationship."
