He was also a prolific voiceover artist, and provided the voices of Meadowlark Lemon in the Harlem Globetrotters' animated TV series, Jazz the Autobot in The Transformers and The Transformers: The Movie (1986), the title character in Hong Kong Phooey and Scat Cat in the animated Disney film The Aristocats (1970).

One of my early childhood heroes [ie: Scatman Crothers] playing the ukulele while singing "Nigger Man." The movie that this song was featured in was titled "Coonskin" and was directed By screen god/animation guru Ralph Bakshi [the director of such cool flicks as Wizards, Cool World, and the original animated versions of both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings]. Coonskin debuted in the spring of 1975, but only lasted in the theaters in New York City for less than a week before it was taken out of the cinemas and banned for its unabashed view and unflinching view on racism and the violence perpetuated behind stereotypes of people of a certain race/creed/nationality.
Since its banning, Coonskin was re-released in the late 80's/early 90's as VHS only and marketed under the new title "Street Fight". If you ever run across this movie, I urge you to get a copy. Yes, it is blatantly and unabashedly racist, but it was a testament of its time [the 70s in New York City - where race relations then were at an all time low]. And for all of the ugly contained within it and the propensity for violence in this half live-action/half animated movie, it was a vehemently ANTI-racist.

This is the oral history story of the making of Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece 'The Shining'.
In October 2012, I made a 17-minute oral history using five interviews from The Elstree Project - an oral history archive which records interviews with Elstree film cast and crew members. In under six months it received over 100,000 hits and was shared on numerous blogs and websites. I wasn't expecting such a response, so when I realised how popular the short was, I looked to see what other content we had in our archive and who else I could ask to interview.
Now I am proud to present the full story, at 55-minutes in length, and with contributions from nine crew members who worked on the film and Stanley Kubrick's widow, Christiane. I believe this is the most in-depth exploration into the making of "The Shining" on film, from the perspective of those who actually worked on the production.

When I saw the new Aesop Rock album length video was a shot for shot remake of Kubrick's 'The Shining' I kept wondering how the original audio would sync up with the video.
I didn't touch a frame of the original edit, I edited the sound to the video -syncing up as many moments with the sound effects and relevant dialogue given the time constraints.
If I cut out your favorite line I'm sorry -though if it pops into your mind it's like it was actually there anyway.
Putting this together I found a new appreciation for the power of sound on film to make even the simplest images compelling. It's really a testament to the power of sound design and scoring.

Early life
Crothers was born in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1910. He was the son of Benjamin Crothers and Donnie/Donel. He got the name Scatman when he auditioned for a radio show in 1932 at the former WSMK (now WING) in Dayton, Ohio. The director didn't think his given name was catchy enough, so Crothers quickly concocted the handle Scat Man, although this talent, scat singing, would develop later. He continued to enjoy this talent throughout his career, even teaching scat singing to college students. Later, the nickname was condensed to Scatman by Arthur Godfrey. In his early career, he also associated with many Cleveland-based acts and frequently played on the scene in Ohio.

Aesop Rock's The Shining with the original movie audio
When I saw the new Aesop Rock album length video was a shot for shot remake of Kubrick's 'The Shining' I kept wondering how the original audio would sync up with the video. I didn't touch a frame of the original edit, I edited the sound to the video -syncing up as many moments with the sound effects and relevant dialogue given the time constraints. If I cut out your favorite line I'm sorry -though if it pops into your mind it's like it was actually there anyway. Putting this together I found a new appreciation for the power of sound on film to make even the simplest images compelling. It's really a testament to the power of sound design and scoring.

One of my early childhood heroes [ie: Scatman Crothers] playing the ukulele while singing "Nigger Man." The movie that this song was featured in was titled "Coonskin" and was directed By screen god/animation guru Ralph Bakshi [the director of such cool flicks as Wizards, Cool World, and the original animated versions of both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings]. Coonskin debuted in the spring of 1975, but only lasted in the theaters in New York City for less than a week before it was taken out of the cinemas and banned for its unabashed view and unflinching view on racism and the violence perpetuated behind stereotypes of people of a certain race/creed/nationality.
Since its banning, Coonskin was re-released in the late 80's/early 90's as VHS only and marketed under the new title "Street Fight". If you ever run across this movie, I urge you to get a copy. Yes, it is blatantly and unabashedly racist, but it was a testament of its time [the 70s in New York City - where race relations then were at an all time low]. And for all of the ugly contained within it and the propensity for violence in this half live-action/half animated movie, it was a vehemently ANTI-racist.

Hong Kong Phooey is a 16-episode (31 shorts) Hanna-Barbera animated series that first aired on ABC Saturday morning from September 7, 1974 to December 21, 1974. The series stars Hong Kong Phooey, the “number one super guy” who travels about the city in his “Phooeymobile” fighting crime with the aid of his manual, The Hong Kong Book Of Kung Fu. The stories begin at the police headquarters, where Hong Kong Phooey's alter ego, Penrod "Penry" Pooch, works as a mild-mannered janitor under the glare of Sergeant Flint ("Sarge"). Also at the police station is Rosemary, the telephone operator, who has a crush on Hong Kong Phooey. After Rosemary gets a call and explains the crime, Penry runs into a filing cabinet and (always getting stuck) transforms himself into Hong Kong Phooey.
Despite the theme song, Hong Kong Phooey is a classic screw-up, and often fails to save the city only to be saved by his sidekick pet cat, Spot. In a few rare circumstances, Hong Kong Phooey actually does save the city, but usually as an unintended side effect of his intended attack going horribly wrong. Hong Kong Phooey is a respected superhero who always gets full credit for Spot’s success.
A running gag is that Hong Kong Phooey is such a respected hero that when his incompetence causes him to crash into, harm, or otherwise inconvenience a civilian, the passerby feels honored as opposed to annoyed or embarrassed, such as when he drove the Phooeymobile through wet cement, splattering the workers, who responded that it was an honor to have a whole day's work ruined by "the great Hong Kong Phooey."
Hong Kong Phooey was voiced by American actor, singer, dancer and musician, Scatman Crothers. Sergeant Flint was voiced by Joe E. Ross, best known as Officer Gunther Toody in the early '60s television series Car 54, Where Are You?.

Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) discusses the power of the Shining with Danny (Danny Lloyd).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" -- or, rather, a homicidal boy in Stanley Kubrick's eerie 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel. With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) informs Jack that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family; Jack thinks it's no problem, but Danny's "shining" hints otherwise. Settling into their routine, Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny's alter ego, "Tony," however, starts warning of "redrum" as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own. Frightened by her husband's behavior and Danny's visit to the forbidding Room 237, Wendy soon discovers what Jack has really been doing in his study all day, and what the hotel has done to Jack.

Scatman Crothers and F.E. Miller doing a classic "Indefinite Talk" routine in a minstrel show. Flournoy Eakin Miller (1885 - 1971) was a writer and lyricist who was also a Broadway actor and vaudeville performer who partnered with Aubrey Lyles. Miller was a pioneer in the development of African American musical theater, and later a writer on the Amos 'n' Andy Show. From another film I had images of sheet lightnings and a 16mm blow-up of normal-8 nazi-propaganda - so I combined these three elements. I was always sure that the song is about an future occurrence." Despite real life tragedy while filming the movie and a less-than-desired response from the public in 1983, the Twilight Zone movie grew in popularity over the years through cable and VHS/DVD releases. Benjamin Sherman "Scatman" Crothers (May 23, 1910 – November 22, 1986) was an American actor, singer, dancer and musician known for his work as Louie the Garbage Man on the TV show Chico and the Man and as Dick Hallorann in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), the latter of which earned him the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was also a prolific voiceover artist, and provided the voices of Meadowlark Lemon in the Harlem Globetrotters' animated TV series, Jazz the Autobot in The Transformers and The Transformers: The Movie (1986), the title character in Hong Kong Phooey and Scat Cat in the animated Disney film The Aristocats (1970).

Scatman Crothers in the opening scene of "Coonskin" [1975]
One of my early childhood heroes [ie: Scatman Crothers] playing the ukulele while singing "Nigger Man." The movie that this song was featured in was titled "Coonskin" and was directed By screen god/animation guru Ralph Bakshi [the director of such cool flicks as Wizards, Cool World, and the original animated versions of both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings]. Coonskin debuted in the spring of 1975, but only lasted in the theaters in New York City for less than a week before it was taken out of the cinemas and banned for its unabashed view and unflinching view on racism and the violence perpetuated behind stereotypes of people of a certain race/creed/nationality. Aesop Rock's The Shining with the original movie audio
When I saw the new Aesop Rock album length video was a shot for shot remake of Kubrick's 'The Shining' I kept wondering how the original audio would sync up with the video. I didn't touch a frame of the original edit, I edited the sound to the video -syncing up as many moments with the sound effects and relevant dialogue given the time constraints. If I cut out your favorite line I'm sorry -though if it pops into your mind it's like it was actually there anyway. Putting this together I found a new appreciation for the power of sound on film to make even the simplest images compelling. It's really a testament to the power of sound design and scoring.

One of my early childhood heroes [ie: Scatman Crothers] playing the ukulele while singing "Nigger Man." The movie that this song was featured in was titled "Coonskin" and was directed By screen god/animation guru Ralph Bakshi [the director of such cool flicks as Wizards, Cool World, and the original animated versions of both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings]. Coonskin debuted in the spring of 1975, but only lasted in the theaters in New York City for less than a week before it was taken out of the cinemas and banned for its unabashed view and unflinching view on racism and the violence perpetuated behind stereotypes of people of a certain race/creed/nationality.
Since its banning, Coonskin was re-released in the late 80's/early 90's as VHS only and marketed under the new title "Street Fight". If you ever run across this movie, I urge you to get a copy. Yes, it is blatantly and unabashedly racist, but it was a testament of its time [the 70s in New York City - where race relations then were at an all time low]. And for all of the ugly contained within it and the propensity for violence in this half live-action/half animated movie, it was a vehemently ANTI-racist.

This is the oral history story of the making of Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece 'The Shining'.
In October 2012, I made a 17-minute oral history using five interviews from The Elstree Project - an oral history archive which records interviews with Elstree film cast and crew members. In under six months it received over 100,000 hits and was shared on numerous blogs and websites. I wasn't expecting such a response, so when I realised how popular the short was, I looked to see what other content we had in our archive and who else I could ask to interview.
Now I am proud to present the full story, at 55-minutes in length, and with contributions from nine crew members who worked on the film and Stanley Kubrick's widow, Christiane. I believe this is the most in-depth exploration into the making of "The Shining" on film, from the perspective of those who actually worked on the production.

When I saw the new Aesop Rock album length video was a shot for shot remake of Kubrick's 'The Shining' I kept wondering how the original audio would sync up with the video.
I didn't touch a frame of the original edit, I edited the sound to the video -syncing up as many moments with the sound effects and relevant dialogue given the time constraints.
If I cut out your favorite line I'm sorry -though if it pops into your mind it's like it was actually there anyway.
Putting this together I found a new appreciation for the power of sound on film to make even the simplest images compelling. It's really a testament to the power of sound design and scoring.

Hong Kong Phooey is a 16-episode (31 shorts) Hanna-Barbera animated series that first aired on ABC Saturday morning from September 7, 1974 to December 21, 1974. The series stars Hong Kong Phooey, the “number one super guy” who travels about the city in his “Phooeymobile” fighting crime with the aid of his manual, The Hong Kong Book Of Kung Fu. The stories begin at the police headquarters, where Hong Kong Phooey's alter ego, Penrod "Penry" Pooch, works as a mild-mannered janitor under the glare of Sergeant Flint ("Sarge"). Also at the police station is Rosemary, the telephone operator, who has a crush on Hong Kong Phooey. After Rosemary gets a call and explains the crime, Penry runs into a filing cabinet and (always getting stuck) transforms himself into Hong Kong Phooey.
Despite the theme song, Hong Kong Phooey is a classic screw-up, and often fails to save the city only to be saved by his sidekick pet cat, Spot. In a few rare circumstances, Hong Kong Phooey actually does save the city, but usually as an unintended side effect of his intended attack going horribly wrong. Hong Kong Phooey is a respected superhero who always gets full credit for Spot’s success.
A running gag is that Hong Kong Phooey is such a respected hero that when his incompetence causes him to crash into, harm, or otherwise inconvenience a civilian, the passerby feels honored as opposed to annoyed or embarrassed, such as when he drove the Phooeymobile through wet cement, splattering the workers, who responded that it was an honor to have a whole day's work ruined by "the great Hong Kong Phooey."
