The city of Hamtramck in Michigan is undergoing a demographic change like no other in the US. Thirty years ago it was nearly 100 percent Polish-American. Since then, it's tried hard to attract immigrants from all over the world, including many Muslims.
The city, near Detroit, recently became the first in America with a majority Muslim city council. While many candidates in the US presidential campaign have tried to stoke fears of Muslim immigrants, Hamtramck is proving them wrong.

A female suspect was taken in custody after a police pursuit through Detroit and Hamtramck Tuesday morning.
The pursuit ended at about 10:20 a.m. when the woman stopped in the area of Caniff and Dequindre.
Detroit police tell us they began to follow the blue Ford transit-type van after a 911 call came in about a possible kidnapping at Stockton and Gable streets on the city's east side. Commander Timothy Leach from the 11th precinct says the caller thought they heard a child screaming for help. When police got to the scene, they saw the van take off suspiciously and began to follow it.
The woman drove through apartment parking lots and residential areas, weaving through police cars before eventually stopping in Hamtramck. Once the vehicle stopped, she got out of the car and attempted to run.
She was tackled to the ground by multiple officers before being taken into custody.
No one was in the vehicle with the woman, but Leach says police kept up the chase just in case a kidnapping had occurred.
Leach says the woman has been taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation, but will be charged with fleeing police and being in possession of a felony vehicle. He says when they ran the plate, which is a handicap Florida license plate, that the vehicle was wanted in Hamtramck and Flint.

Hamtramck, Michigan
Hamtramck (/hæmˈtræmᵻk/ ham-TRAM-ik) is a city in Wayne County of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 22,423. Hamtramck is surrounded by the city of Detroit except for a small portion of the western border that touches the similarly surrounded city of Highland Park.
Known in the 20th century as a vibrant center of Polish American life and culture, Hamtramck has continued to attract immigrants and in 2015 became the first majority Muslim city council in the United States.
Name
Hamtramck is named for the French-Canadian soldier Jean François Hamtramck who was the first American commander of Fort Shelby, the fortification at Detroit. It was originally known as Hamtramck Township.
History
Hamtramck was originally settled by German farmers, but Polish immigrants flooded into the area when the Dodge Brothers plant opened in 1914.Poles used to make up a large proportion of the population. It is sometimes confused with Poletown, a traditional Polish neighborhood, which used to lie mostly in the city of Detroit and includes a small part of Hamtramck. As of the 2010 American Community Survey, 14.5% of Hamtramck's population is of Polish origin; in 1970, it was 90% Polish.

A female suspect was taken in custody after a police pursuit through Detroit and Hamtramck Tuesday morning. The pursuit ended at about 10:20 a.m. when the woman stopped in the area of Caniff and Dequindre.
Detroit police tell us they began to follow the blue Ford transit-type van after a 911 call came in about a possible kidnapping at Stockton and Gable streets on the city's east side. Commander Timothy Leach from the 11th precinct says the caller thought they heard a child screaming for help. When police got to the scene, they saw the van take off suspiciously and began to follow it.
The woman drove through apartment parking lots and residential areas, weaving through police cars before eventually stopping in Hamtramck. Once the vehicle stopped, she got out of the car and attempted to run.
She was tackled to the ground by multiple officers before being taken into custody.
No one was in the vehicle with the woman, but Leach says police kept up the chase just in case a kidnapping had occurred.
Leach says the woman has been taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation, but will be charged with fleeing police and being in possession of a felony vehicle. He says when they ran the plate, which is a handicap Florida license plate, that the vehicle was wanted in Hamtramck and Flint.

This Mythicist Milwaukee documentary explores how the adhan is perceived and understood by the residents of Hamtramck and the effect it has had on this small, historically Polish-Catholic suburb of Detroit.
