Nature notes
Sparrowhawks are most often seen dashing nimbly through trees, or alongside the bottom of a hedge, in order to spring a surprise on tits and chaffinches that have not seen them coming. Now they can be found high in the sky. They are courting, and both members of a pair climb up and soar round in wide circles with their tails spread. Now the male soars higher than its mate, now the female climbs above him. Sometimes the male soars alone, while the female sits in a tree below, and suddenly the male dives with spectacular speed to join her, or to mate with her. These displays often take place over the wood the pair will nest in. When the sparrowhawks are soaring, starlings and other small birds will sometimes take their chance and fly up and mob them. Crows regularly pursue sparrowhawks, but the hawk can escape by flying deftly between the branches of a large tree that the crows find it harder to get through.
