Hello, hello! It’s the prime of winter and the streets are covered in ice, which means we’re already getting excited for our fall 2017 catalog. This fall we are publishing 11 titles, which together are exemplary of the power of the graphic novel medium:

A poignant personal account of life in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq (Poppies of Iraq by Brigitte Findakly and Lewis Trondheim); a novella about race and racism (The Good Times Are Killing Me by Lynda Barry) that is as revolutionary now as it was when it first appeared in 1988; a new collection of Tom Gauld's signature Guardian strips once again showcasing his inventive and humourous take on all things literary and pop culture (Baking with Kafka); perfectly paced gems about life, family, memory, and more by Leslie Stein (Present); stripped-down autobiography from a mini-comics legend (From Lone Mountain by John Porcellino); and a giant-size comics treasury of Donald Trump quotes from the 2016 election, as illustrated in classic comics by R. Sikoryak (The Unquotable Trump).

Plus for younger readers, there's a board book by Leanne Shapton (Toys Talking), a collected compendium of Anouk Ricard’s beloved kids comic (Anna & Froga: Completely Bubu), and two entries in our Moomin (Tove Jansson) and Kitaro (Shigeru Mizuki) series that will now be fall titles, Moomin and the Brigands and Kitaro’s Strange Adventures.

Here they are, sorted by publication date. Click through on the book title to read the full book description or to check out a preview of the book in question. You can also find a PDF of our catalog here.

SEPTEMBER

Poppies of Iraq

By Brigitte Findakly and Lewis Trondheim

Poppies traces Brigitte’s relationship with her homeland over the course of her life, touching on cultural practices, schooling, Saddam Hussein’s state control, and her family’s history. It’s intimate and wide-ranging, a portrait of how one can become exiled from one’s homeland and also still feel terribly connected to that place.

In stores September 5, 2017! $21.95 USD / $24.95 CAD / 6.5" x 9.5" / 120 pages / 4-color / hardcover / 9781770462939

The Good Times Are Killing Me

By Lynda Barry

Edna Arkins is growing up white in late 1960s Seattle, a place transformed by white flight and faltering attempts at racial integration. In this heartbreaking novella about Edna’s friendship with a black neighbour named Bonna, Barry shows the inevitability of the loss of that friendship, by portraying the myriad ways racism defined that time and place.

In stores September 12, 2017! $16.95 USD / $19.95 CAD / 5.5" x 7" / 144 pages / B&W / hardcover / 9781770462618

Present

By Leslie Stein

With her brilliant color palette and innovative watercolored style, Leslie ventures out into the world, taking pleasure in the kindness of strangers, remembering the complexities of childhood with adult eyes, and finding solace in the beauty of the every day. Each scene is perfectly framed, and over the course of Present, Stein brings out themes and joys and heartaches, showing us a life in snapshots.

In stores September 19, 2017! $19.95 USD / $21.95 CAD / 6" X 7.75" / 160 pages / 4-color / hardcover / 9781770462946

Anna & Froga: Completely Bubu

By Anouk Ricard, translated by Helge Dascher

All of Anna, Froga, Bubu, Ron, and Christopher’s adventures in one wonderful compendium. I’m so thrilled we get to publish these modern classics of kids comics. The stories ring true with the frustrations and joys of being a little kid, with the kinds of misadventures real kids face.

In stores September 26, 2017! $19.95 USD / $21.95 CAD / 6" x 8" / 208 pages / 4-color / paperback / 9781770462922

From Lone Mountain

By John Porcellino

Drawn from John P’s legendary mini-comic King-Cat, From Lone Mountain collects some of Porcellino’s most powerful work. These stories share moments of joy and heartbreak by giving weight to the natural world’s silences and random encounters and speaking to the beauty of abandoned lots, fields in springtime, and forests covered with snow. Porcellino’s rambling road trips feature prominently in this collection, a loving portrait of the continued survival of small town America.

In stores September 26, 2017! $24.95 USD / $27.95 CAD / 6" x 9" / 240 pages / B&W/ paperback / 9781770462953

OCTOBER

Toys Talking

By Leanne Shapton

This is a beautifully illustrated board book intended for very young readers. What do our stuffed animals think about life? Shapton draws portraits of beloved bears, ducks, and bunnies, revealing on the opposing page their innermost worries and joys, from the mundane to the existential.

In stores Oct 10, 2017! $12.95 USD / $14.95 CAD / 6.7" X 6.7" / 48 pages / 4-color / 9781770462984

Baking with Kafka

By Tom Gauld

This is our second collection of Tom Gauld’s weekly Guardian cartoons, following hot on the heels of his much-loved 2016 graphic novel Mooncop. His comics distill absurdity: our arguments about literature, our frustrations with the opacity of the art world, our love of pop culture. Using tropes of monsters and science fiction, he talks about contemporary society’s obsessions and anxieties.

In stores October 24, 2017! $19.95 USD / $21.95 CAD / 8" x 5.9" / 160 pages / 4-color / hardcover / 9781770462960

Kitaro’s Strange Adventures

By Shigeru Mizuki, translated by Zack Davisson

Kitaro takes on a giant Cyclops, Blackbeard, a sea captain who’s trying to create hell on earth, and more! The longest story of this third Kitaro collection recounts a huge yokai-vs-yokai battle when a gang of Chinese yokai plot to enslave the Japanese populace. In addition to Mizuki’s legendary whimsical tales, translator Zack Davisson pens an essay on the history of Kitaro, and includes a selection of yokai files describing the powers of the various yokai our hero Kitaro confronts in Kitaro’s Strange Adventures.

In stores October 31, 2017! $12.95 USD / $14.95 CAD / 5" x 7.5" / 192 pages / B&W / trade paperback / 9781770462861

NEW IN PAPERBACK

Goliath

By Tom Gauld

We are thrilled to be offering our first book with Tom Gauld in paperback format, five years after its original publication. I love the way Gauld makes us feel for awkward old Goliath, his lack of awareness of being used as a pawn, his clunkiness and his not-quite-fitting into any room.

In stores September 7, 2017! $16.95 USD / $19.95 CAD / 6" x 8.5" / 96 pages / 2-color / paperback / 9781770462991
