Let us learn from our past struggles, in the USA and in Malaysia. May Day should be an occasion to reflect not jubilate, to engage not agonize, to demand not relent, and to organise, not complain. We need systemic change that can guarantee equality, fraternity, self-management and socialisation of the commonwealth, guided by a bottom–up approach to decision making. We need a labour movement that is multicultural and international, feminist, active in urban and rural struggles, and that prizes reason over superstition, justice over hierarchy, self-management over state power, international solidarity over nationalism. We need to fight for a universal human community, not parochialism and separatism. The organisational power and strategic location of the Malaysian union movement provides an excellent point of departure for building this counter-movement. This is our appeal and message as we celebrate this May Day, on the eve of dark days in which the storm clouds gather over humanity – but in which the light of hope of a better future can break through, if we arm ourselves with the correct ideas and approaches. May Day began as an example of globalisation-from-below. Let us rally to it. Let us take back its original vision: liberty, equality, unity. read full story / add a comment

Στα αποσπάσματα αυτά από το βιβλίο της Ida Mett “Οι Ρώσοι Χωρικοί στην Επανάσταση”, η συγγραφέας παρέχει κάποια ιστορικά στοιχεία σε ό,τι αφορά τη ρωσική αγροτιά, κατά την παραμονή και την αρχή της Ρωσικής Επανάστασης του 1917. Υπήρξε μια έκρηξη του αγροτικού συνεταιριστικού κινήματος καθώς μεγάλο μέρος των Ρώσων αγροτών εγκατέλειψε τον στρατό, γυρίζοντας την πλάτη στον πόλεμο της Ρωσίας κατά της Γερμανίας και επέστρεψε στο σπίτι του. Το πολιτικό κόμμα που απολάμβανε τη μεγαλύτερη υποστήριξη εκ μέρους των αγροτών και χωρικών ήταν το Σοσιαλιστικό Επαναστατικό Κόμμα (SRS - ή αριστεροί εσέροι), αλλά ήταν διαιρεμένο σε δεξιές και αριστερές φράξιες και σύντομα άφησε την επαναστατική πρωτοβουλία να περάσει στα χέρια των μπολσεβίκων, οι οποίοι από το 1921 άρχισαν να καταστέλλουν αποτελεσματικά όλες τις άλλες επαναστατικές ομάδες, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των αναρχικών. read full story / add a comment

Ο Γιάννης Ταμτάκος ήταν πολιτικός αγωνιστής αρχικά του τροτσκισμού και μετέπειτα του αναρχισμού που έζησε και δραστηριοποιήθηκε στην Ελλάδα. Για την δράση του διώχτηκε τόσο από το κράτος όσο και από τους σταλινικούς. Ήταν ο τελευταίος επιζών ηγέτης της μεγάλης απεργίας του 1936 στη Θεσσαλονίκη. read full story / add a comment

Su muerte fue la última de las ejecuciones de los líderes del republicanismo irlandés acusados de haber participado en la insurrección irlandesa de ese año. Almost a century ago, an armed insurrection took place in Ireland to end British rule and to establish an independent Irish Republic. The 1916 Rising was soon accompanied by major popular revolts against World War One across Europe and later emulated by anti-colonial movements across the Global South.
When it comes to remembering the 1916 Rising, why do conservative politicians and historians want to convince us that it would have been better for us if Pearse and Connolly had stayed at home? Why did the state parade lots of military equipment and personnel down O’Connell Street to mark the centenary? Why did so many people turn out to watch it?
This panel attempts to think through the meaning of 1916 for us today, and the politics at stake in how these events are remembered, forgotten, and mis-remembered.

If W. H. "Bill" Andrews (1870- 1950) is remembered today, it is usually as a founder and leader of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA, today the SACP). Ghana, West Africa, was a British colony called "Gold Coast" until 1957. It became the first independent country in "black" Africa after reforms and struggles in the 1940s and 1950s. The new president, the brilliant Kwame Nkrumah, and his Convention People's Party (CPP), had fought for independence. Now they aimed at major changes in the society, even speaking of socialism. And Nkrumah proposed a united African government for the continent: Pan-Africanism. But by the mid-1960s, hopes were fading. There were good reforms in education and services and self- respect for Africans that helped remove colonialism's damages. But the CPP has become a dictatorship, with a personality cult around Nkrumah. Unions and struggles were suppressed. The economy was in trouble. A new elite hijacked independence and resources. When the military seized power in 1966, people celebrated in the streets. Today Ghana is one of the poorest African countries.
