Jessica Hart on 'approaching the hill' in the ageist modelling industry

Retirement should be the last thing on a 30-year-old's mind, but not if you're working in the notoriously ageist and fickle modelling industry.

Jessica Hart, one of Australia's hottest model exports, told Fairfax Media at the launch of Triumph's Triaction sports bra in Sydney this week that even she is still surprised that work is still coming in ahead of her 31st birthday.

"You can't really control much. So far I've been really lucky. I pinch myself that I am still in demand, so to speak. I'm just going with the flow and people are booking me, so that's good," she said.

"When I was 20 I couldn't have ever imagined being this successful at 30. I've been really lucky.

"There are the young ones now, too, but there is still a lot for us ones around that are approaching the hill."

The Sydney-born, Melbourne-raised, New York-based model feels like times might be changing for the better and gave the example of 51-year-old supermodel Cindy Crawford's long, illustrious career. But Hart believes that "nothing lasts forever," so she has a contingency plan in place. She is currently "working like a dog" on relaunching her Luma beauty line in the coming weeks with the aim to go global at the end of the year.

"It's something I've been working on for six years and that will be something I will be able to continue working on and develop," she explained.

Hart left home 16 years ago to pursue her career – 12 of those years have been spent in NYC, where she now describes as "pretty intense".

Speaking about US President Donald Trump's America, she said: "Every day is a bit of a nail-biter and like, 'what's going to be next?' Nothing surprises me at this point. Anything can happen. What can you do?

"I'm lucky to call Australia home, that's for sure. I'm lucky that that is my back-up option," she said.

She didn't air her opinions by walking in the women's marches, because she "tries to stay pretty neutral and out of the political battle," but added: "I appreciate the people that do".

No stranger to modelling lingerie as a former Victoria's Secret model, Hart flew to Sydney for just two nights where she helped launch Triumph's new Triaction bounce-certified sports bra during an energy-filled spin class in the Royal Botanic Gardens.

After the flying visit she was heading straight back to New York where her main predicament was whether she would go to Paris for fashion week or not.

"I will go if I have it in me... I will have to fly out the next day and there's jetlag," she said.
