Conder father denied bail on family violence charges after threats to kill

A Conder father facing family violence charges had his bail denied Saturday morning.

The 41-year-old was remanded in custody and is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court on March 14 after he allegedly made threats to kill his ex-wife and mother of his son.

The court heard that during a divorce mediation appointment with his former partner of 19 years, it is alleged the man became aggressive.

This aggression continued after the meeting, where it is alleged the accused jumped in his car and chased after his ex-wife.

It was alleged he tried to run the woman's car off the road.

The accused's threatening behaviour towards his ex-wife then continued through text messages and emails, where it is alleged he made threats to kill her on two occasions.

The prosecutor said the woman was genuinely concerned the defendant would follow through on his "quite clear threats to kill".

Through his defence counsel, the defendant volunteered bail conditions which included no contact with either his ex-wife or her parents.

But magistrate Glenn Theakston denied bail because of the seriousness of threats the accused made to his family and that his "offending behaviour does seem to be escalating".

"I'm not satisfied with the bail conditions put forward," he said.

Magistrate Theakston also cited a connection between the defendant's use of the drugs cannabis and ice with his increased violence towards his ex-wife.

As well as his regular drug taking, the court heard the accused is also alleged to have a problematic gambling habit.
