ACT government rolls out online map to show when mowing will occur in your suburb

Ever looked at the long grass in your suburb and wondered when the territory's mowing team would be visiting next?

A new interactive map is taking the guesswork out of the mowing schedule. Click on any suburb in Canberra and it will show when it's due for mowing, and when it was last mowed.

Minister for transport and city services Meegan Fitzharris said the online resource gives people a convenient way to track the progress of mowing in their suburb and across the ACT.

"We know how important mowing of public land is to the community, particularly for people who love to get outdoors, visit our parks and walk their dogs around Canberra's suburbs. We also want to make sure our bush capital looks its best," Ms Fitzharris said.

"Keeping the public informed about mowing is part of the service that the community expects. This map will assist by providing that information in an easy to understand and visual way."

Weston Creek Community Council chairman Tom Anderson said he welcomed the new information.

"Anything that makes people more informed is a good thing," he said.

He said people in Weston Creek were always looking for information on when public areas were going to be mowed, particularly those on the fringes of suburbs close to nature reserves.

"In those areas in Weston Creek, because they were affected by the fire in 2003, they really feel the pain when they see the grass getting up towards a metre high, they start to worry," Mr Anderson said.

"That's why it's really important it is maintained, and this is a good step forward."

However Mr Anderson said general maintenance in suburbs had to be kept up to scratch as well.

Particularly in Weston Creek, he said, there was a problem with weeds and trees growing out of gutters and concrete dividers.

"I do believe that they've tried to ge the mowing right, but there are other issues with maintenance which haven't been done as well," Mr Anderson said.

Ms Fitzharris said the interactive mowing map would be updated weekly to inform the public of delays to the schedule as a result of wet weather or high fire danger days.

The annual mowing season program runs until the end of April.
