After a round of golf with Sugar Ray Leonard, Adam Scott nominates his 'title fights' for 2017

After a round of golf with boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard, Adam Scott has nominated the six tournaments he considers to be "title fights" in 2017.

The 36-year-old's US PGA Tour season starts at this week's tournament at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, a year after finishing runner-up to Bubba Watson by one shot before winning the next two events in Florida.

Plays of the Week

Big hits from the old timers, outstanding goals and trick plays, these are the most exciting, silly and downright crazy plays in the sport world this week.

Scott - the 2005 champion at Riviera CC - was paired in Wednesday's pro-am with Leonard and the world No.7 enjoyed seeking tips about peaking at the right time.

"To use a boxing term, you have to break some events down as a sparring session and then there's the fight coming up," Scott said.

"It was interesting to hear what's in the mind of another athlete who understands the very highest level and obviously (boxers) have to peak for a fight."

With two US PGA Tour victories but no majors in 2016, the 2013 Masters champion says there are six events he will prioritise as he looks to bag a second career major.

"This year, I'd pick the four majors, the Players Championship and the Aussie Open (as title fights)," said Scott.

"I'd look at those six as my absolute priorities. I'd love to peak for them and I've set my schedule around doing that."

Scott's only tournament since the Australian PGA Championship in December was January's Singapore Open, where the Queenslander led during the final round but finished ninth after a Sunday 74.

He'll tee it up as the defending champion at next week's Honda Classic and the World Golf Championship event in Mexico the week after.

Scott's last tournament before the Masters will be the Houston Open.

Scott admits he's also altered his focus slightly to try to reclaim the world No.1 ranking he held briefly in 2014.

"I've really focused on winning majors the last few years and it hasn't quite happened. Last year I played poorly in the majors which was disappointing," he said.

"I'm putting a focus on getting back to world No.1 at least once more for a (period) in my career."

Scott's rain-shortened 2005 victory is among his four top-10s and six top-25s at Riviera, where this week he'll face 19 of the world's top 30 golfers.

"It's my favourite golf course on the PGA Tour, so I'm very excited to start my season here like I have a few times in the past and hopefully kind of pick up where I left off here last year."

Other Australians in the field include world No.1 Jason Day, Aaron Baddeley, Marc Leishman, Geoff Ogilvy, Greg Chalmers, John Senden, Cameron Percy, Steven Bowditch and Cameron Smith.
