Swaledale is one of the northernmost dales (valleys) in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in northern England. It is the dale of the River Swale on the east side of the Pennines in North Yorkshire.
Swaledale runs broadly from west to east, from the high moors on the Cumbria–Yorkshire boundary at the watershed of Northern England to the market town of Richmond, where the dale meets the lowlands. Nine Standards Rigg, the prominent ridge with nine ancient tall cairns, rises on the watershed at the head of Swaledale. To the south and east of the ridge a number of smaller dales (Birkdale, Little Sleddale, Great Sleddale and Whitsundale) join to form the narrow valley of upper Swaledale at the small village of Keld. From there, the valley runs briefly south then turns east at Thwaite to broaden progressively as it passes Muker, Gunnerside, Low Row, Healaugh and Reeth. The Pennine valley ends at Richmond, where an important medieval castle still watches the important ford from the top of a cliff. Below Richmond, the valley sides flatten out and the Swale flows across lowland farmland to meet the Ure just east of Boroughbridge at a point known as Swale Nab. The Ure becomes the Ouse, and eventually (on merging with the Trent) the Humber.

Swaledale is one of the most northerly dales in the UK. Most of the buildings were built in the 18th and 19th centuries to support the huge lead mining industry in the area at the time. A rare ITN programme from around 1971 featuring Jake Thackray as a 'roving reporter'. This features variations of "Fine Bay Pony", "Go Little Swale" and "Old Molly Metcalfe" in which Jake is accompanied by a choir of school children. Apologies for the quality.
Our video is a guided walk in the beautiful valley of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales. We start from Muker and walk along side the River Swale passing the ruined stone mine buildings and waterfall at Swinner Gill. We stop to admire East Gill Force just before we walk on to Keld. From Keld we walk back to Muker on the Pennine Way taking a detour to admire Kisdon Force. This is an easy to moderate 6.75 mile walk.
A slideshow of the meadows in upper Swaledale with lots of buttercups and field barns. Birdsong includes curlew, blackbird, lapwing, pheasant and oystercatcher. The attractive village of Muker is in the heart of the hay meadows, and is within easy walking distance of Thwaite, Keld and Gunnerside.
A short video showing a snap shot from a swaledale tup sale. The sale was held at Kirkby Stephen Auction Mart where farmers sold their aged rams and tup lambs on this particular day. A short interview with Mark Richardson, Livestock Auctioneer, explains how Swaledale Sheep have played their part in the chain of British Lamb Production.
Swaledales have been described as ‘the hardiest of all British sheep apart from the Herdwick’.
First trial of the DJI Phantom 3 4K, so please excuse the jerky movements (more practice needed). Footage of Swaledale and an old smelting mill.

A Flattyres-MTB Social Rides for The Edge Cycleworks tackling 17.5 miles of the Classic Jacob's Ladder route in the Dark Peak. The difficult climbs and steep technical descents, makes this route a tough one but so much fun too! The Yorkshire Dales (also known simply as The Dales) is an upland area of Northern England dissected by numerous valleys. The area lies within the county boundaries of historic Yorkshire, though it spans the ceremonial counties of North Yorkshire and Cumbria. The Dales is a collection of river valleys and the hills among them, rising from the Vale of York westwards to the hilltops of the main Pennine watershed. In some places the area extends westwards across the watershed, but most of the valleys drain eastwards to the Vale of York, into the Ouse and then the Humber. The area is a national park, world-famous for its picturesque combination of rolling hills, woodland, wild moorland, dramatic landscapes and gentle valleys that create unique and beautiful vistas. There are many opportunit...
Cilla Cameron and Heather Ritchie are two of Britain's most skilled rag rug makers with many years' experience of teaching the art of hooky and proddy. Together they organise the annual Reeth Rug Retreat held each September at Grinton Lodge, near Reeth, in the beautiful valley of Swaledale. The four-day rug-making course has places for about 35 students and offers a variety of teachers and workshops. This video shows the 2014 event.
Today's walk was in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales National Park and we began the day at Malham. After Passing Janet's Foss we had an awesome scramble up Gordale Scar, we then headed to Malham Tarn and then back down to Malham Cove. It was a fantastic walk and we topped it off by having food and drinks at the Bucks Inn in Malham. Links related to the video. In June I embarked on a four day tour of Northern England. I travelled a distance of almost 1000 miles along A and B roads taking in the rolling hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the majestic North Yorkshire Moors, the stunning Dales and the high hills of the Pennines, before dipping down to explore the beautiful Lake District, returning through the riding heaven of the Peak District. In this episide I leave Masham and head into the Yorkshire Dales. Along the way I pass an old AA Telephone Box. http://www.theaa.com/newsroom/news-2012/aa-telephone-box-centenary.html I hope you enjoy watching it as much I enjoyed doing it. Appleby-in-Westmorland is a town and civil parish in Cumbria, in North West England. It is situated within a loop of the River Eden and has a population of approximately 2,500. It is in the historic county of Westmorland, of which it was the county town. The town's name was simply Appleby, until the local government changes of 1974. When a successor parish was formed for the former borough of Appleby, the council effected a change in the town's name, to preserve the historic county's name. Appleby's main industry is tourism, due to its history, remote location, scenery and closeness to the Lake District, the North Pennines, Swaledale and Howgill Fells. Appleby is overlooked by the (privately owned) Appleby Castle, a predominantly Norman structure, which provided the home for Lady Anne Cli...
The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I say a little pray for you
While combing my hair, now,
And wondering what dress to wear, now,
I say a little pray for you
Forever, and ever, you'll stay in my heart
and I´ll love you
Forever, and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, forever, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me.
I run for the bus, dear,
While riding I think of us, dear,
I say a little pray for you.
At work I just take time
And all through my coffee break-time,
I say a little pray for you.
Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
and I will love you
Forever, forever we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, forever, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me.
My darling believe me,
For me there is no one
But you.
