Miraculous escape after car splits in two, shifts power pole in crash

Two men have made a miraculous escape after the car they were in crashed into a power pole with such force it split the vehicle in two in Melbourne's east.

The white Ford Falcon was driving south on Springvale Road, Donvale just after 1am on Saturday when it clipped another car, left the road and smashed into a power pole between Beryl Street and Lindsay Avenue.

The Falcon broke in two but remarkably the 22-year-old Broadmeadows driver was uninjured while his passenger, a 34-year-old Nunawading man, was taken to the Royal Melbourne hospital with chest injuries in a serious but stable condition.

The driver and passenger of the second car that was clipped were unharmed.

The crash caused power to be cut temporarily to nearby homes.

Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said the driver was assisting police with their inquiries.
