Live like a local in Sydney

Everyone knows the Sydney you see on postcards; the twinkling waters of the harbour, the shiny white sails of the Sydney Opera House and the city beaches tucked into coves around the coastline. Tourists love to visit the New South Wales capital to eat at world-class restaurants like Neil Perry’s Rockpool Bar and Grill (66 Hunter Street, Sydney; rockpool.com) or Peter Gilmore’s Quay (Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay Sydney; quay.com.au), but Sydney also holds a host of local secrets; things that Sydneysiders would rather keep to themselves.

Markets are a huge part of Sydney life, but with a serviced apartment kitchen you are not just wandering past the stalls taking photos, you are shopping for your next amazing meal. Get up early and head to the Sydney Fish Market (Bank St & Pyrmont Bridge Road, Sydney; sydneyfishmarket.com.au) to beat the crowds of locals on the hunt for the freshest seafood in the city. This is a working market with fresh catches being unloaded while you shop and whether you are buying sushi-grade tuna from Musumeci Seafood (musumeciseafoods.com.au) or getting a kilo of fresh-cooked prawns from Claudio’s (claudiosseafood.com.au) you will be in for a treat later on.

Carriageworks Farmers Market (245 Wilson St, Eveleigh; carriageworks.com.au) near Redfern in the city’s south is on every Saturday from 8am to 1pm with some of the best artisan produce around. Celebrity chef Kylie Kwong (kyliekwong.org) has a stall and occasionally does masterclasses in the main building. Visit the famous inner-city purveyors of pickles, Cornersmith (cornersmith.com.au) or grab a wheel or a wedge of brie cheese from Country Valley Dairy (countryvalley.com.au).

Nearby, you can take home some of Sydney’s best coffee with a take-home pack of freshly roasted beans from The Grounds of Alexandria (7A, 2 Huntley St, Alexandria; thegrounds.com.au) one of the city’s buzziest cafes and an organic garden set in an old industrial building.

Pack a picnic and head to Circular Quay, then walk straight past all the tourist cruises and catch the state-government operated Manly ferry (transportnsw.info). The Sydney ferry system is one of the most beautiful public transport links in the world and locals not only use the ferries to get to work but to travel past “the Heads” – the north and south points that make up the harbour entrance – to Manly to go to the beach. In about half an hour you can be sitting at The Manly Wharf Hotel (Shop 19 E Esplanade, Manly Wharf; manlywharfhotel.com.au) sipping a beer in the waterside bar, or try a craft brew at boutique brewers 4 Pines Brewing Company (29/43-45 E Esplanade, Manly; 4pinesbeer.com.au) a local favourite.

Heading to Bondi? Make sure you check out the Bondi market on Sundays and be sure to tear yourself away from the beach to explore the back streets of Bondi where you will find Aquabumps, (151 Curlewis St, Bondi Beach; aquabumps.com) Eugene Tan’s gallery of local Bondi life that started as a blog celebrating the beauty of the beach in the morning.

For one of the city’s newest live music venues head to Newtown’s Leadbelly, (42 King St. Newtown; facebook.com/leadbellynewtown) named for a US blues musician. This venue, previously known as The Vanguard, is a big supporter of live music and a hit with the bohemian Newtown set.

So while there is plenty to see and do on the tourist trails around Sydney, if you take the time to stay a little longer, search out the best produce, the local secrets and the best places to go, you might just experience the city like those who live there.
