A 37-year-old man escaped from the ACT Supreme Court on Friday afternoon after he was found guilty of charges believed to be sexual offences.

An ACT Policing spokeswoman confirmed a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Craig Joseph Stevens, with search efforts for the man resuming on Saturday.

Stevens ran from the courtroom shortly after the jury had delivered a guilty verdict in the case being held before Justice David Mossop.

Security guards attempted to chase down Stevens after his escape from the court room but were unsuccessful.

In the hours shortly before the verdict was handed down, Stevens took to Facebook to write "sitting at court awaiting the jurys final verdict and i tell ya iv got everything crossed" (sic).

Following the escape by Stevens, family members commented on his Facebook post appealing for information.

"His mother and I are very worried. Any news please," one family member wrote.

Another said: "Craig you are stressing your family out please contact your dad this is not helping".

The police spokeswoman would not comment further when asked about the search for Stevens.

Police are appealing for anyone with further information to come forward.
