"For us, it was a way of life, to work hard and see the results." - Estelle Kelley
In 1929, Roy and Estelle arrived in Hawai'i with little more than a few dollars in their pockets and a lot of determined optimism. They saved, invested, started a family and 18 years later built their first hotel in Waikiki.
Today, Outrigger Hotels and Resorts continues to prosper, operating premier resorts and hotel properties throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean. Foresight and hard work have steadily directed the company forward; warmth and generosity have continually guided its success.
Roy and Estelle were equal partners, and shared tough decisions about how they were going to get ahead. During his tenure with the architectural firm of C.W. Dickey, Roy also developed several small apartment buildings. He served as architect, designer, engineer, contractor, administrator, and often his own financier. Roy and Estelle worked long hours, seven days a week, including menial jobs and manual labor - whatever it took to get the job done. Even their children, Richard, Jean and Pat were involved with nearly aspect of the business.
While Roy designed and constructed the buildings that became the Outrigger chain, it was Estelle who quietly and efficiently developed and managed the operating systems that made these buildings hotels.
Today Outrigger is owned and operated by KSL Capital Partners, LLC., one of the world's leading investors in hospitality. KSL is committed to continue the strong legacy and tradition that the Kelley family has built.
