A number of flights arriving and departing Sydney Airport have been delayed or cancelled due to wild weather, with heavy rain expected to lash the city as it hosts Mardi Gras this weekend.

Qantas confirmed six of its flights have been affected this evening.

Sydney Airport asked passengers to check with their individual airlines about specific flights.

The cancellations are on the eve of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival, with some inter-state visitors venting concern that they will not be able to make it to the event.

The weather bureau has issued a severe weather warning for Sydney, Illawarra, South Coast, as well as the Snowy Mountains district, with the Hunter and Central and Southern Tablelands also expected to be impacted.

The NSW State Emergency Service urged people in affected areas to prepare for the deluge, with parts of the state expected to get up to 150 millimetres of rain. Flash flooding is also possible.

"The best thing people can do for us at the moment is to make sure their gutters and downpipes are nice and clear," the SES's Phil Campbell said.

"Also to make sure their cars are parked undercover, [and] their kids and pets are indoors when the worst of the weather happens."
