New Blood! D-SAGAWA, TASHME, THE BOLOS, SLOPERS, and D-BOYS

March 9th, 2017 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
D-SAGAWA

Date & location formed:
We deformed December 25th 2015, I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a cold frosty christmas morning and we met with each other to jam in an old abandonded baby-food factory on the MA/NH line after answering a craigslist ad posted by our bassist Jon a few nights prior. Chills ran down my spine as Larry stroked that first chord. from that moment on, I knew this would become something.

D-Sagawa (photo by Reid Haithcock)

Reason for forming:
Because we ran out of things to set on fire(in the name of Kawakami).

What are your lyrics about?
Death.

How would you describe your sound?
A bear being killed by a motorcycle.

What’s in the future for this band?
Prison, torturous existence, then eventually death. As for now, we are currently recording tracks for new releases and will play in your basement.

Band name:
TASHME

Date & location formed:
We formed in April 2016 in Toronto, ON, Canada.

Reason for forming:
We’re all friends who have been going to shows and playing in bands for years and I guess we just had the resources and motivation to work on something together. We wanted to do something with a serious tone to it, in terms of lyrical content and stylistically. We named the band after a Japanese internment camp in BC, Canada where one of our member’s grandfather was held during WWII. This was sort of a starting point of what would inform some of our lyrics.

What are your lyrics about?
Different songs cover different topics but some recurring lyrical themes include: the unjust incarceration/detainment of people, dealing with more personal issues like anxiety, exploitation within capitalism, and a little bit of scene politics. Some songs are in Spanish.

How would you describe your sound?
I’m not really sure. We wanted to take influences from 80s Hardcore bands like Jerry’s Kids, YDI, Void and things in that vain. I think we started there and added some breakdowns, more throaty vocals, and a bit of a metallic edge. D-beats.

What’s in the future for this band?
More releases (working on an EP), touring.

Band name:
SLOPERS

Date & location formed:

Luke: Chicago in 2016.

Reason for forming:
Amy: We just wanted to have a good time.
Luke: There really wasn’t a reason not to start a band.

What are your lyrics about?
Amy: The lyrics are about having good times, having bad times, being lazy, eating doughnuts, and getting shredded.
Luke: Shit talking, eating shit, dealing with shit, fuckin’ shit…..

How would you describe your sound?
Amy: The musical equivalent of making poor decisions in a good choose your own adventure book.
Luke: We literally don’t give a fuck about anything, so whatever that translates to into your ears.

What’s in the future for this band?
Amy: Not sure, but we’re gonna try our goddamn best.
Luke: Doing a split with Alouette (Chicago), hopefully doing a few dates outside of Chicago this summer (hit us up).

Every Philip K. Dick novel read aloud simultaneously through semi functioning peavey amps.

Band name:
LACKER

Date & location formed:
Early 2016 / Oakland, CA.

Reason for forming:
We do what we want. neither of us knew how to play and were tired of seeing technically skilled bands make music that didn’t hold a resonance with us.

What are your lyrics about?
Intimacy, sex, love, race, class, trauma, lies.

How would you describe your sound?
Maybe like no trend meets hole but minus dudes and guitars.

What’s in the future for this band?
More shows with queer femmes of color, more new material, maybe tapes.

Links and contact info:

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:

NO DICE

Date & location formed:
Late July 2016, at a show in Seattle.

Reason for forming:
Reason for forming: We were at some show yelling about how much we like Madball, and we decided we should start a band. Turns out two of us were kidding about
liking Madball. We also do not sound like them.

What are your lyrics about?
Our lyrics are about things that matter to our singer: what’s going on in the world, feelings, friendship, unity.

How would you describe your sound?
Several people have said we remind them of Outburst, without actually sounding like Outburst. Someone said we reminded them of Freedom, but they were wrong.

What’s in the future for this band?
Our demo just came out on tape. We have some shows planned, most notably a quick tour to the Bay Area with Rare Form from Philly/MA in April and Book Your Own Fest in Olympia, also in April. We have a few new songs we’ll hopefully record soonish.

barbed-wire-500x12

CELL ROT

Spring 2016.

Reason for forming:
A former band called Exhaaust fell apart after members moved away. There were some unfinished songs and the remaining members wanted to keep on crushing.

What are your lyrics about?
Death, decay, violence and global destruction.

How would you describe your sound?
Brutal and Heaaaavvvvvyyyy.

What’s in the future for this band?
Booking a west coast tour for April and hopefully recording some new songs for a release TBD.

Links and contact info:

cellrothc.bandcamp.com

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
DUMSPELL

Date & location formed:
October 2015 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Reason for forming:
Bradley and Olesya wanted to start a band together, so they got Cody to play guitar, PJ learned how to play bass, and Mary decided to try vocals. We were excited about starting a band with people who had never played before. Then PJ moved away so we enrolled the infamous Hampton ‘Freddie Madball’ Martin.

What are your lyrics about?
Shitty people, shitty ~feelings~

How would you describe your sound?
Angular punk?

What’s in the future for this band?
Everything Is Not OK in March, hopefully another tour soon, and a full-length record coming sooner than later.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
MENTALITY

Date & location formed:
February 2016, San Jose, CA.

Reason for forming:
We came from a heavier side of the hardcore scene and couldn’t help but notice the lack of unity and the unnecessary violence, and we were sick of it. We formed Mentality to help be a part of the positive and more unified side of California hardcore, and hardcore as a whole.

What are your lyrics about?
Our lyrics revolve around themes of scene unity, world issues, and personal turmoil.

How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is a punchy, aggro youth crew with influences from traditional bands like Breakdown, Raw Deal, and Outburst, as well as more modern bands like The Flex, Lower Species, and Freedom.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’ve been taking things slow but with a few micro tours under our belts we plan on going on our first longer tour later this summer, as well as putting out another demo possibly early in the summer.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:

HEADSPLITTERS

Date & location formed:
Brooklyn, NY 2016.

Reason for forming:
The end is nigh!

What are your lyrics about?
Realities of war, and the inherent hypocrisy of the system. A reminder of the possibility of life outside governing rule.

How would you describe your sound?
We started playing some motorpunk shit, and we played the riffs too fast… people started comparing us to Puke. So we fully embraced that Scandinavian raw punk sound. writing riffs that channel those influences started flowing naturally and we ran with it.

What’s in the future for this band?
7 inch on Brain Solvent Propaganda, Varning in September, and hitting the road as much as possible.

New Blood! DRUJ, PREENING, PROWLER, SNAKE CHURCH, DARK WEB, YUPS, and CLAN DOS MORTOS CICATRIZ

February 16th, 2017 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
DRUJ

Date & location formed:
Fall 2016.

Reason for forming:
Our bassist Ross was wanting to do a dbeat gig, we all really liked the idea so we jumped on board and got together. We all share a lot of the same views on ideas involving music, so we moved swiftly with writing out first demo.

What are your lyrics about?
War, torture, psychosis, loss, creeps.

How would you describe your sound?
Pulling a small brown pissed off locust’s wings off.

What’s in the future for this band?
We have an east coast tour in the works with our friends in Crutch, mid April or so. We’re stoked.

Band name:
PREENING

Date & location formed:
Oakland, CA. May 2016.

Reason for forming:
Sam: If I remember right, Max and I talked about playing music together three or four years ago when I worked at a record store. I think he was attracted to my homemade DNA shirt. I was attracted to the uninhibited, madcap spirit of his music-making. I still am. It took a while, but when we revisited the idea, he pitched bringing in Alejandra, who was kind enough to agree to join. The sense of spontaneity and possibility, along with the naturally egalitarian atmosphere of practices, feels energizing.

Alejandra: Someone found out I could play a bass on a Saturday and told Max, who then hit me up two days later asking if I wanted to play some time. I was flattered and jumped at the opportunity. Didn’t know Sam was involved in the project initially but was psyched when I heard.

What are your lyrics about?
Sam: One song began as a paean to my PO Box, an old brass one with masonic-looking engravings in Berkeley, and morphed into something unrecognizable. Another one is about the collapse of digital news organizations in the wake of an event such as a solar flare, which would cripple the internet. Some of them have been collaborative, written jointly in as little as fifteen minutes.

Max: Body horror, classism, the privilege of self censorship, Giorgio Di Chirico, the temporal nature of art, mercy/grace in the natural world.

Alejandra: Distorted(?) perceptions of the world around you, communication, misinformation, the perfect double taper.

How would you describe your sound?
Alejandra: Give it a listen and make up your own mind.

Sam: For shorthand, I tend to tell people it sounds “pretty busted,” which might seem negative but to me captures the skronk and abrasion, negative space and hardscrabble grooves.

Max: Herky jerky, caddywhompus, asymmetrical punk.

What’s in the future for this band?
Alejandra: In the near future -getting our demo out and going on tour. In general -creative and personal growth. To share and facilitate experiences with strangers and friends through our music, and hopefully have fun while doing it.

Sam: We’re recording a demo on a handheld tape recorder, which a small label is interested in pressing in a tiny edition. And then we’ll tour up to Olympia, Washington to record more of a proper title. Also, abstaining as a band from Facebook, Bandcamp, and the like (though we do intend to hand-code our own website instead).

Max: Record, tour, write. Use Punk to expand our vision. Make friends and be allies. Challenge ourselves to mine the grist of inspiration without slumping to puerile regurgitation. Provide free access to our music and band info without relying on proxies.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are about how I feel about the world and things and people around me.

Very rude very sexy and very loud.

Band name:

SNAKE CHURCH

Date & location formed:
June 2015, Birmingham, AL.

Reason for forming:
I had Big Zit and Tenement booked at my house and I just really wanted to play with those bands.

What are your lyrics about?
Loving drugs, hating God and government.

How would you describe your sound?
Eli blatantly tries to rip off CCR, Liam’s favorite band is My Chemical Romance, Eliot got into butt rock as a joke but accidentally started liking it and BJ exclusively listens to Devo so…

What’s in the future for this band?
Lots of shows here in Birmingham,
we’ve got several new songs to record, there’s talk of a music video, were planning a little tour with Liam’s other band, Backyard Camping, and a trip down to Rotten Fest in Tallahassee with Eli’s other band, Bad Example. Other than that, we’re just gonna keep on chooglin’.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
DARK WEB

Date & location formed:
We formed in Philly in the summer of 2016 after me (Sims Hardin) and RJ Gilligan started recording some demos at his house. We didn’t have a drummer at the time, so I played drums first on the recordings, then we would lay down the rest of the music which was something we had to learn how to do successfully, but it worked out.

Reason for forming:
We just formed because we were bored and wanted to do something new. Rj and I liked the way each other played. I wanted to take some hooky Ramones sounding bullshit and have Rj play some crazy solos and riffs over it. It was a bedroom project that turned out well and we formed a band. That was pretty much it.

What are your lyrics about?
Dark Web’s lyrical content narrates tragic characters and violent wasteland cityscapes affected by pollution, alien invasion, government conspiracy, defective artificial intelligence, and severe mental health issues.

How would you describe your sound?
Our music has been described as stompy sewer-punk characterized by driving drums, heavy squealing guitars, and guttural nihilistic vocals.

What’s in the future for this band?
We would like to do another EP early this year, and maybe put a full LP out by the end of the year. I’m aiming to do some shorter tours in the Late summer and Fall.

Reason for forming:
Too much gross hardcore music in the scene.

What are your lyrics about?
Just livin’ the life of an average joe from the 70s.

How would you describe your sound?
Rock, and roll.

What’s in the future for this band?
The 80’s & 90’s.

Band name:
CLAN DOS MORTOS CICATRIZ

Date & location formed:
Curitiba/Paraná, Brazil.

Reason for forming:
I was around 15 y.o. when I decided to record some noise stuff using the moniker of Clan dos Mortos Cicatriz, for no specific reason. I decided to leave Cãos, got bored of my other bands, and still had some bass riffs composed, so I invited Okuyama-san to help me record and eventually join the band.

What are your lyrics about?
About no longer being human and/or failing while being human. Mostly of it is inspired by the eroguro-nonsense literary movement and authors like Osamu Dazai and Junichiro Tanizaki.

How would you describe your sound?
Maybe blackened post-punk? Not sure.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re already recording new stuff, it’s gonna be called “TOGAWA EP” and it will be a punk hommage to the japanese new wave singer Jun Togawa and her band, Yapoos.

What are your lyrics about?
Anjelica: Revenge as freedom from abuse, some of the things going on around us in punk that suck.

How would you describe your sound?
Brat punk you can stomp to.

What’s in the future for this band?
Tours and a 7 in!

Carlos, Kyle, and Josh started playing Sabertooth Zombie cover songs together in high school and continuously jammed since. Whips started as a project in 2015 with Carlos and our old singer, Matthew. We took a break for year and reformed with our current singer Daniel in October 2016.

What are your lyrics about?
True crime, mental struggle, Daniel’s haunting perspective of the world through the eyes of a serial killer.

How would you describe your sound?
I would describe our sound with rock n roll influences. Other people have said that we “sound like” G A G, so we went with it, which is we made shirts with ball gags on them. :)

What’s in the future for this band?
Continue to rock in more places inside or outside of the country.
