Shocked swimmers watched on as lifeguards performed CPR on the pair on the sand, before handing over to paramedics.

It is understood the pair, both international tourists who are related to each other, were found unconscious in the water at the southern end of the beach, about 50 metres apart. They did not appear to be swimming between the flags.

The 66-year-old woman was given CPR before she was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in an ambulance. She remained in hospital in a critical condition on Thursday night.

The man, 69, died at the scene. It is understood he went into cardiac arrest.

Surf Life Saving NSW said the pair were part of a group of five tourists who went swimming at the southern end of the beach.

A spokesperson said all five got into difficulty and were pulled from the water, with three of the swimmers "unscathed" while two needed "urgent medical care".

"CPR was immediately commenced on the man but despite the best efforts of all those involved he was unable to be revived," the spokesperson said.

The drowning is the second in NSW within 24 hours, after a 54-year-old man was pulled from the water at Bellinger Valley on the NSW north coast on Wednesday.

It follows a horror summer in the state's waterways, where more than a dozen people lost their lives in waterways through December and January.

The deaths prompted police and Surf Life Saving NSW to urge swimmers to take care in the water.

Anyone with information on the Bondi incident has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
