Casey Affleck addresses sexual harassment allegations, Oscar win backlash

  • 27 reading now

Casey Affleck has spoken about the sexual harassment allegations which cast a cloud of controversy over his awards season run.

The actor, who won an Oscar for his leading role in Manchester By the Sea earlier this week, was accused of sexual harassment in relation to his conduct towards two female co-workers on the set of mockumentary I'm Still Here in 2009.

Oscars 2017: Brie Larson doesn't clap

In what is being described as a form of protest, Brie Larson doesn't clap for Casey Affleck at the Academy Awards.

The women, the film's director of photography and a producer, alleged Affleck had made unwanted sexual advances towards them while on set, and had crawled into one of the women's beds while they were sleeping. The matter settled out of court.

While Affleck is not allowed to comment on the incidents under the terms of the parties' settlement, he spoke, admittedly vaguely, about the case and its impact on his Oscar run to the Boston Globe on Tuesday.

"I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else," Affleck "wearily" told the Globe.

"There's really nothing I can do about it, other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time."

In a similarly obscure comment to the New York Times last year, the actor, who is the younger brother of fellow actor Ben Affleck, said he was "over" the incident.

"It was settled to the satisfaction of all. I was hurt and upset - I am sure all were - but I am over it," Affleck wrote to the Times by email. "It was an unfortunate situation - mostly for the innocent bystanders of the families of those involved."

The allegations have prompted some to criticise the praise of Affleck's performance throughout Hollywood's awards season.

When his Oscar nomination was announced earlier this year, actress Constance Wu published a series of tweets criticising the Academy's decision to honour Affleck.

"Men who sexually harass women [for] Oscar! [Because] good acting performance matters more than humanity, human integrity!" she wrote.

"Boys! Buy [your] way out of trouble by settling out of court! Just do a good acting job, that's all that matters!"

Actress Brie Larson, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of an abused woman in Room in 2016, has been observed not applauding Affleck while presenting him with accolades this year: first at the Golden Globes in January, and again at the Oscars earlier this week.
