Personal Safety and Crime Prevention

Personal Safety is something we think about every day. Whether that is a safety issue when we are out in public or at home. I know that when we were choosing where to live, our safety and security was one of the things we considered in looking for our future home.

There are some tools that have been put in place to help us as individuals be safe in our homes. You may have heard of the Block Watch Program and for apartment communities, Crime Free Multi-Housing. I have been a trainer with our local Crime Free Multi-Housing Program in Spokane for over 15 years. I believe in the value of it and as a property manager, it was critical to keeping our apartment community and tenants safe.

Today, in fact, I will be sharing with a senior apartment community about the topic of Personal Safety. Let me share a couple of tips with you.

  1. Always be aware of your surroundings whether you are at home, walking, or driving in your car. Being watchful can keep you out of trouble or get you out of trouble.
  2.  Always listen to your gut instincts. We were blessed with a sixth sense for a reason. If something doesn’t “feel” right, then it probably isn’t right. If it feels dangerous, get out of there.
  3. We are not Superman or Wonder Woman. We are also not police officers. Call 9-1-1 if you are in a situation where you need help or if you see someone else in trouble. Please don’t put your own life on the line. We are not trained to save a life – our own or others. Thankfully men and women in law enforcement are trained and willing to take care of us. Please thank them the next time you see them.

Personal Safety is one of my favorite topics. I was taught by Sandy Richards, a very knowledgeable woman who was a Crime Prevention Practitioner here in Spokane.  I learned from the best. She has since passed away but her life lessons still sound in my head. I am thankful for people who share their wisdom.

Be safe wherever you are.
