Seahawks 2017 salary cap numbers
The Seahawks rank in the bottom third of the NFL in terms of 2017 salary cap space, but that shouldn't be alarming for Seattle fans.
Unlike last season, when nine starters were among the team's unrestricted free agents entering the offseason, the 2017 class features just one starter among them. That player, kicker Stephen Hauschka, already appears on his way out of town after Seattle brought in former Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh to compete for the kicking job.
That leaves No. 2 tight end Luke Willson as the biggest name among the team's free-agent crop, which means the estimated $26 million-plus Seattle has in salary cap space can be used to bring in a potential difference maker from the outside or to sign some in-house players -- like strong safety Kam Chancellor, tight end Jimmy Graham or center Justin Britt -- to contract extensions.

We went through the Seahawks' salary cap data according to Spotrac to see which players had the biggest and smallest cap hits on the team for 2017, which you can find in the gallery above.
A few notes:
Players' yearly salary cap numbers are determined by their base salaries plus prorated portions of their signing bonuses and assorted other roster or workout bonuses. Base salaries, which are not guaranteed, often escalate over the life of a contract, giving teams an opportunity to save money by cutting ties with a player who may not have lived up to a big-money deal by backloading the yearly salary.
For example, the four-year, $87 million extension quarterback Russell Wilson signed ahead of last season included a base salary of $12,342,000 for the 2016 season, but goes all the way up to $17,000,000 by 2019, the final year of the deal.
Alternatively, contracts like the four-year, $56 million extension signed by cornerback Richard Sherman ahead of the 2014 season can provide a pretty stable cap number for the entirety of the deal. Sherman's cap number varied from $12.2 million in 2015 to just under $14.8 million last season, with the final two years of his deal including cap numbers of $13.6 million and $13.2 million, respectively.
