Former Fremantle Docker Shane Yarran has pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting a family member.

Yarran was charged in November when he was still on the Dockers' list, but in December he announced his retirement from AFL.

He was a mature-aged recruit, and had played only six games for Fremantle.

During a brief appearance in the Fremantle Magistrates Court this morning the assault case was set down for a trial in August.

He is also facing a separate charge of unlawful wounding over an fight outside a tavern in Camille in July 2015.
